This piece involves the playing of one’s body as an instrument. For musicians, this piece is short, easy to setup, exciting for the crowd, a bit of a workout, fun to play and a challenge.My aim for this piece was to emulate the concept of ‘seeing sounds’ by only creating sound in the light. It was a challenge to get the lighting effect that provided us with a sharp difference between light and dark.Because it is such a physical piece, I would encourage the performers to add in choreography and to exercise the power of choice in terms of sticking (‘handings’ and ‘footings’) and the choice between standing and sitting. The performers may also experiment with visual mediums like talcum powder and other sound choices like using toy hammers instead of hands and choosing extremely thick shoes.

In my search for great pieces, some were too hard, others too easy. So, I decided to write my own.The piece also draws inspiration from funk and Taiko drumming. It also pays homage to the great percussion composer Kevin Tuck and his piece Summon the Spirits, who has created drumming pieces that are the staple of percussion music all around the world.As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, my compositions place a heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in, rather than being accurate.

I think that students will enjoy working out the challenges in this arrangement and will feel rewarded for their efforts.  This arrangement is suitable especially for social gatherings and Christmas parties. I have written these 24 compositions with the aim of providing complete works (rather than excerpts) for harmonic analysis that utilize chords that follow a sequence commonly found in theory textbooks. Book I begins with Minuet in F Major, introducing the I and V triads in root position and contains nothing else but these chords. The next composition, Waltz in E major, continues with root-position I and V triads and introduces the root-position IV triad. In this successive fashion, each new composition introduces a new chord, carefully avoiding any chords reserved for future study while cumulatively building upon an ever-increasing chordal vocabulary. All twelve compositions in Book I are devoted to diatonic triads and begin exploring non-chord tones but do not have any seventh chords or secondary functional chords.

The longing call of the solo reed instrument tries to escape the clutch of the choir narrating its predicament with voice. It was nice not having to write my own text, but I did choose this poem intentionally at the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic. My aim was to embody the hollow feeling of living in a society that offers freedom with one hand but firmly directs people with the other. The PDF download includes the score followed by the English Horn part. The piano reduction, not audible in the recording, is nice for rehearsal but optional for the performance.
