Written by Howard Blake for the film in 1982, a new version sung by Aled Jones, was a top 5 hit in the UK in 1985. It has been a permanent fixture on Christmas playlists ever since. This version is arranged as a duet for two Trumpets. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal Christmas performances. The rhythms are straightforward though there are extended quaver passages at medium tempo. The overall performance time is around two and a half minutes. The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on the trumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite. This full version is arranged as a solo for Tenor Saxophone and Piano and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. I decided to write lyrics for each movement, creating a version for voice (male and/or female) and classical guitar, then expanding it to this version for SATB Choir with classical guitar and percussion. The percussion parts are easy and meant to be performed by members of the choir. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. This download is the score for the fourth movement, Air for Chiara. Performance time is 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Demand level is mostly intermediate with a few advanced sections.
