Violin Duet Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1488279 Composed by William Shield. Arranged by Robert Hoskins. Classical. 89 pages. Artaria Editions #1065167. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488279). Artaria Editions AE387The London premires of Opp.1 and 2 probably took place at William Napier's morning concerts held at the Thatched House Tavern in St. James's Street. The performers at this venue were gentlemen amateurs backed with some professional assistance (possibly including Shield) and the audience consisted largely of nobility (but not ladies) on their way to court. Napier's concerts were more than a vehicle for airing newly published works or composers, and when it was proposed to revive the series in 1792, the Morning Chronicle of 28 January recalled that they had served to improve the taste and science of the amateur as well as introducing professional merit to the highest patronage. Shield's duets, expressly written with talented amateurs in mind (according to the title-page of Op.2), exactly suited the repertoire of the morning concerts. Both sets of duets are neatly engineered with a violinist's grasp of technique and articultion, and with each part sharing in the musical interest. The prevailing spirit of Op. 1 is Italianate and there are many attractive details to be heard. The amoroso movement of No.1, for example, with its ardent episodes and the hunting rondo of No.2 which begins with the representation of distant horn calls and later depicts a chromatically wounded prey. If the opening of No. 3 gives the impression of an exotic dance, including the audible thrum of a guitar or harp, then the rondo of No.4 can be imagined as a spring song animated with birds and breezes. The opening of No.5 is as propulsive as a theatre overture whilst No.6, written for either violins or flutes, assumes a suitably fluty tone. Op.2 is an altogether more compact set which sharpens the focus on elements already noticed in Op.1. Shield employs a variety of forms including minuet, variations, rondo and canon; and he also adopts vocal styles including lyric song (for the affettuoso movement of No.1) and arioso (for the opening adagio of No.2). The first movement of No. 3 sounds like a mini stage overture whilst the adagio of No. 5 can be heard as a melting duet. Both movements of No. 4 adhere to folk style, incorporating hurdygurdy like figurations and simulated versions of the northern pipe-tunes which Shield himself so avidly collected. This edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of Napier's source. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. The notation of appoggiature has also been standardised to minimize confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets.Robert Hoskins.

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1255098 Composed by Ross Fiddes. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 25 pages. Ross Fiddes #848692. Published by Ross Fiddes (A0.1255098). It was in the aftermath of the 2020 summer bushfires in Australia that soprano Ayse Goknur Shanala rang me from Cyprus to suggest I compose a work about climate change, a subject of concern for me.  My research for lyrics did not elicit anything I considered suitable, so I turned to Derek Dowding, a local poet, singer, actor, raconteur, and a person vitally interested in the future of humanity and of the planet.Derek and I had worked together before – he brilliantly performed the role of Abelard in the workshopping and concert performances of my hybrid opera “Abelard and Heloise”, which, in 1997, won the supreme CONDA (City of Newcastle Drama Award)  for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Newcastle Theatre’ against some 200 other stage productions in Newcastle’s bi-centenary year.Derek worked long and late on the lyrics for the work, producing an emotional document covering history, cause and effect.  His words produced musical responses from me which I consider react appropriately to both his words and the subject matter. I hope our listeners will agree. For the musical treatment I had to consider that the length of the work, through-sung, 20+ minutes, required a recurrent grounding to avoid too many thematic ideas getting in the way of the words.  To that end, I created a quasi-reflective section which appears, rondo-style, quite a few times during the length of the piece.  And, for further cohesion, I built an ABA (ternary) section early to address certain word structures.  Mostly, the various sections followed the stanza structure provided by Derek, with some combinations.  My musical style is essentially melodic, but with dramatic and other episodes, be they tonal, astringent, harmonically indecisive and so on.  In building the work I was principally influenced by the impact and flow of the words. The work is quite mammoth for both the singer and the pianist.  I was absolutely delighted that Anna Fraser again premiered a work of mine – in 2015 she marvellously premiered another major composition of mine, reviewed here:  http://soundslikesydney.com.au/reviews/concert-review-the-man-in-the-other-roomacacia-quartetanna-fraser/19830.htmlWe can only hope that the new work ultimately adds to the chorus of warnings and concern about the climactic future that awaits if we continue to ignore or postpone dramatic and urgent attention to addressing the causes of climate change.A living orb cloaked white and blue and greenRevolving and evolving, tight-hugged in orbit flightWe ride her back; dependent, fragile offspring.Suckling all the while …but have we bonded?A world unlike any other world we’ve seenGifted with Water, Air, Earth and perfect Light. The essentials of life. Freely, these gifts she brings.Free for all but how have we responded?                                                                     Poem© 2020 Derek DowdingRoss FiddesJanuary 2023.

Tuba Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.991803 Composed by Jason Allie. Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,World. Individual part. 9 pages. Joaba LLC #3109629. Published by Joaba LLC (A0.991803). DescriptionA delightful, intermediate level work suitable for encouraging students, hobbyists and professionals to improve or show off their performance skills. This lively work engages the audience with a breadth of moods from enlightening to reflective to celebratory. A great recital piece or encore piece to show off the melodiousness, harmoniousness and vibrancy of the tuba. Please send feedback, praises and more to contact@joaba.com.Total Duration: ~8 minutesPerformance Notes Prelude The real art of performing this piece is to master its dynamics. With the long pianissimo to forte crescendo at the introduction, the contrasting forte/mezzo piano sections and brisk, shorter crescendos for the cadences, the tubist must be aware of dynamics at all time and use them wisely. The second aspect to performing this piece is to contrast the 2 eighth note plus quarter note slurs motif against the arpeggiations.  The introduction starts with the slurs and evolves into the arpeggiations by the first forte and the remaining piece explores the contrast between the two.  Performers should feel free to try different dynamics, try different tempos (like zipping through the arpeggiations and slowing for the motif), etc.   The goal is to bring the listener through the pleasantries of introductions to feel fresh and eager for further discourse ahead. March The rewarding challenge in this piece is to bring out the difference between cheery and con brio.  The former being achieved by emphasizing the swaggering, strutting feel of the one-measure-per-beat feel and the latter by emphasizing the intervallic bounciness with the one-two march feel.Note that the motif (with the quarter note morphing into an eighth note) along with simpler arpeggiations are brought to play in a new manner reinforcing the positive mood from the prelude. The goal is to befriend the listener with an engaging, buoyant time. Air The tubist will exercise great breath control and phrasing to achieve a sublime solemnness counterbalancing the prior two movements. The motif now takes center stage headlining the main melodic phrases; however, here it is disjointed and conveys the sighing for the solemnness. After the pleasantness of the march, affableness having garnered friendship, we now open ourselves to share some somber matters and offer consolation.  The intended goal here is to add depth to the relationship by addressing darker aspects in the discourse. Slip-jig Rondo Harking back to the compound meter of the prelude, this dance adventurously wakens the listener from the solemnness of the air asserting a new grandness and gladness.  This is a slip-jig put into the rondo form so celebrate the main dance theme when it comes around and put fire and character into the transitions to make it worthwhile. The motif now jumps into the compound meter’s beat and morphs into three slurred, conjoint eighth notes.  Now this motif enables several affects: exciting dance steps, transitions/modulations and concluding the phrases and the piece itself. The performer should aim to lead and amaze the listener with the waltz-like slip-jig rhythm and astound with the virtuosic transitions as a final send-off.

Instrumental Duet Cello,Double Bass,Instrumental Duet - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.841356 Composed by Jean-Baptiste Breval. Arranged by Yuriy Leonovich, Michele Galvagno. Classical,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 106 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #6029285. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.841356). Jean-Baptiste Sebastien Bréval (1753-1823) was a French cellist and composer, who is, perhaps, best known for his cello sonatas, namely the ones in C major (Op. 40, No. 1) and G major (Op. 12, No. 5). Bréval was one of the last students of the cellist and composer Martin Berteau (1691-1771), continuing his teacher’s tradition of composing sonatas for cello with bass accompaniment. With both composers, the bass part was to be played by a second cello, very likely by the cello teacher. Many cellists opt in to have Berteau’s unfigured bass part realised by a harpsichord. However, the two-cello layout was common in the late Classical Era, especially in method books, such as Bréval’s own Traité du violoncelle (where Bréval states that the bass and the cello are one and the same), as well as Romberg’s, Dotzauer’s, et al. Romberg and Dotzauer even composed sonatas for cello and basso (second cello) accompaniment as well, Op. 43 and Op. 103, respectively. Our current publication presents student cellists with a beautifully engraved edition of Bréval’s 6 Cello Sonatas, Op. 28 and Air de Malborough, Op. 13. Bréval composed the Sonatas in c1795, most likely in conjunction with Op. 40, since Op. 28, No. 1 picks up right where Op. 40, No. 6 leaves off. Whereas Op. 40 and Op. 28, Nos. 1-4 are in two fast movements, Op. 28, Nos. 5 and 6 include a slow middle movement, No. 6 even using the thumb. The autograph, which the editor used as the primary source, and the first edition both present each sonata on four pages in score form. Our volume includes a score and parts for each player. The cello part includes fingering and bowing suggestions by Yuriy Leonovich. Each sonata begins with an Allegro movement in sonata form. The finales vary from five-part rondos (Nos. 1, 3, 5), to sonata form (Nos. 2, 6), to theme and variations (No. 4). The slow movement of No. 5 is in simple binary form, and No. 6 is in simple ternary. The six keys Bréval used for Op. 28 are the same as the ones he used for Op. 40, only in a different order. Op. 40 uses the following order: C, F, G, B-flat, A, D. Op. 28 uses the following order: D, C, A, G, B-flat, F. The Op. 28 sonatas are primarily written in tenor clef, whereas Op. 40 is primarily written in bass clef. The playing range is identical for both sets, with the exception of the high B-flat in m. 46 in the slow movement of No. 6, and high B and C in m. 37 of the finale of No. 6. Bréval explores more advanced bow techniques as well.

Woodwind Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1024864 Composed by Kaitlynn Francois. 20th Century. 95 pages. Kaitlynn Francois #3586291. Published by Kaitlynn Francois (A0.1024864). The 21st Century Clarinet Symphony is comprised of a clarinet octet made up of Bb soprano, Alto, and Bass clarinets. The work contains four movements which each have their own unique charm and quirks. The first movement is based on the sonata-allegro form and features two distinct melodies. The second movement is chorale-like in nature and makes use of the full choir's sound. This movement also places parts into pairs that shift every eight bars. The third movement is a minuet and trio. This movement features the upper four parts playing melodic content while the lower four parts provide the foundation and motor functions the drive the movement forward. The fourth movement is a rondo which features three distinct sections. The A section opens the piece and is heard four times total. The B section is heard twice and features high rhythmic contrast to the A section as well as featuring different lines playing the melody.  The C section of this movement provides a radical change from both the A and B sections of the piece as it features both bass clarinets in a duo setting with minimal accompaniment from other voices. Instrumentation: 5 Bb Clarinets, Alto Clarinet, 2 Bass ClarinetsMovements: -Allegro-Chorale-Minuet and Trio-RondoDuration: approx. 10 minuets.

Piano Trio,String Ensemble Cello,Piano,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.752437 Composed by Igor Stravinsky. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 12 pages. RBMusic #6294559. Published by RBMusic (A0.752437). The Firebird suite, by Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky, is based on his 1910 ballet of the same name. It, in turn, is based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing/curse it possesses for anyone who owns it. The ballet premiered at Opéra de Paris as part of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company and was an immediate successful, bringing Stravinsky international fame. The ballet tells the story of the journey of Prince Ivan. He strays into the realm of the evil Koschei, whose immortality is preserved by keeping his soul in a magic egg. Ivan is about to kill the Firebird but is spared. As a token of thanks, she offers him a feather that can be used to summon her should Ivan be in dire need. Prince Ivan then meets princesses who are under Koschei’s spell, falling in love with one of them. After confronting the magician, Koschei sends his minions after Ivan, who summons the Firebird. She intervenes and bewitches the monsters. Exhausted, the creatures and Koschei then fall into a deep sleep. Ivan is then directed by the Firebird to the egg containing Koschei's soul, which Ivan destroys, freeing all those under his spell. Ivan and the princesses celebrate their victory. The music features in Disney’s Fantasia 2000. This arrangement of The Princesses’ Round Dance is for piano trio (violin, violoncello and piano). Great as background music or as a concert item in its own right. A recording of the music from the original soundtrack can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U5xhOISyvA.
