Very little is known about Center except for the fact that he was a songwriter who contributed a great deal to the Christian music genre. Baxter was an early 20th century publisher and writer from Alabama. The song is both a reference to the narrative of Israelites leaving Egypt in Exodus as well as one's testimony of freedom experienced through faith in Jesus Christ. Sections A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the chorus. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of a French augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added in sections C and D.
