By Alan Wagstaff. By Brendan Gleeson. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. 10 pages. Alan Wagstaff #792600. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.1193144).

'A Pint of Plain' is so often preformed in folk circles it has slipped into the the traditional category. The lyric, sometimes called ‘The Workman’s Friend’, was originally a poem by Brian O’Nolan.  A ‘pint of plain’ refers to a pint of Guiness - to distinguish it from other forms of stout - which are often stronger.  The words were put to music by Brendan and Fergus Gleeson.  Brendan Gleeson is an Irish actor and film director, best known for his performance as Alastor Moody in the Harry Potter films.

'The King of the Fairies' is a traditional Irish March which I have arranged for a marching band of Bb clarinet, C trumpet, F Horn, tuba, trombone, piccolo, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone and percussion.

It would work well for any festival, especially a mid-summer affair or, of course, St Patrick's Day. It has a jaunty swung feel.

Choral Choir (SSAA) - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.505695

By Alan Wagstaff. By Alan Wagstaff. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Holiday,Irish,Jewish,Traditional. Octavo. 23 pages. Alan Wagstaff #117353. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.505695).

This original song uses English folk idioms to retell a traditional snowdrop legend. The chorus is an English 'weather rhyme'. It has been set for choir (SSAA), piano, harp, fiddle, and flute. One of the Snowdrop’s folk names is ‘Eve’s Comforter’; another ‘Maid of February’. Candlemas Carol Maid of February, if you will, grace mantle, hearth, and windowsill. So let us all be of goodwill and gather round, together. When Winter holds the world in thrall, and ice and snow lie over all, the Maiden can at once recall, the coming Summer weather. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. When Eve and Adam left Eden fair, the snow and ice lay ev’rywhere, which filled their hearts with bleak despair, for they could find no pardon. They glimpsed the flowers of paradise, beyond the earthly cold and ice, but they could not be perfect, twice, nor get back to the garden. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. A teardrop fell from Eve’s sad eye, and froze upon the ground close by. An angel raised it up on high, and called for Heaven’s power. The ice became a snowdrop, then. Thus hope returned to Eve again. And all the people say: ‘Amen!’ in praise of Winter’s flower. If Candlemas is fair and bright, cold Winter will take a second bite. But if this day brings clouds and rain, Winter won’t return again. Alan Wagstaff The legend tells that, after Adam and Eve were banished from Eden’s perpetual summer, they wandered, despondently, into Earth’s freezing winter. Eve wept as the snow fell around them. Seeing her tears, an angel intervened. He caught a teardrop when it froze and breathed on it, turning it into a snowdrop. When the angel left more snowdrops sprang up. Thus, snowdrops in Winter, serve as a reminder, that better times will come around. The tale was often recalled at Candlemas: February 2nd.

By Alan Wagstaff. By Alan Wagstaff. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. Octavo. 37 pages. Alan Wagstaff #117526. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.507012).

This is a new Irish song about the magic of Irish music. It's arranged for choir (SSAATB), harp, piano, flute, and fiddle. Elements of O'Carolan's 'Inisheer' are woven into the melody. Lyric A Song With No Tune The stories they tell in the Town of Athlone, would gladden the heart of a man made of stone. I joined in with them freely, until it was Spring, then I was off, like a hawk on the wing - searching for fortune - and something to sing. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The pipers are proud in Kildare and Athy; there's no better music found under the sky. But, one bright Summer's evening, I left them behind; put my feet to the road and I followed them blind - searching for fortune - and what I might find. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The fiddlers are famous from Bantry to Cork. The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Alan Wagstaff.

By Alan Wagstaff. By Traditional. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Irish,Multicultural,Traditional,World. 4 pages. Alan Wagstaff #1027344. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.1447560).

This traditional, popular shanty has been arranged by Alan Wagstaff for a folksy ensemble of bass, medium voice, accordion, fiddle, and flute.

'Away, Santiana!', known under several other titles, is a sea shanty referring to the Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. The song dates from at least the 1850s, and might have been inspired by topical events related to conflicts between the armies of Mexico, commanded by Santa Anna, and the U.S., commanded by Zachary Taylor, in the Mexican–American War.The lyrics are not historically accurate.

By Alan Wagstaff. By Alan Wagstaff. Arranged by Alan Wagstaff. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. Octavo. 36 pages. Alan Wagstaff #645329. Published by Alan Wagstaff (A0.1040537).

This haunting, new song, in the mixolydian mode (Bb), is in the Irish tradition. It is written for a female choir (SSAA) with an additional solo part; the accompaniment is for harp, accordion, flute, fiddle, and bass. This song was inspired by J.M. Synge's 1904 play 'Riders of the Storm' and quotes a line from it. The chorus quotes from the Irish version of 'Fhir a Bhartain' a song written in the late 19th century by Sìne NicFhionnlaigh of Tong, Lewis, Scotland. Fear A Bháta The Boatman A fhir a bháta is na horó eile Man of the boat and no one else. A fhir a bháta is na horó eile Man of the boat and no one else. A fhir a bháta is na horó eile Man of the boat and no one else. Mo shoraid slán leat gach áit a dtéid thú. My safe blessing with you everywhere you go. Lyrics O, Bryan McCauley the boats are still moored. and down in Kilronan only ghosts are aboard. The calico is furled and the tide is still low, so rest a while longer, till the time comes to go. It’s the life of a young man to be fishing far from shore. For there’s scant other work on the wild Inishmore. Fhir a bharta na horo – fhir a bharta is-na eile. Mo shor slan leat gach ait a dteid thu. The herring are sleeping and safe from the net. So rest my fisher lad - do not rise yet. The hillcrests of Galway are scarce tinged with red. O, sleep a while longer and keep to your bed. It’s the life of a young man to be fishing far from shore. For there’s scant other work on the wild Inishmore. Fhir a bharta na horo – fhir a bharta is-na eile. Mo shor slan leat gach ait a dteid thu. The cold-hearted Ocean knows nothing of men; it takes them or leaves them, with no heed where or when. The candles are out in the homes round the Bay, so stay in my arms, love, till the first light of day. It’s the life of a young man to be fishing far from shore. For there’s scant other work on the wild Inishmore. Fhir a bharta na horo – fhir a bharta is-na eile. Mo shor slan leat gach ait a dteid thu.

'Where Are We Going?' is an Irish style waltz written for soprano voice, fiddle, harp, accordion, flute, and bass. Here is the lyric:

'Where are we going?' you asked me today.
Truth is - I have no idea.
Wherever we're heading - we're heading that way;
today - let's enjoy being here.

I don't buy into this mad human race.
Everyone's rushing to some distant place.
Everyone’s hoping some day they'll arrive.
I'm busy being alive.

What happens next, now that we two have met,
Leave in the lap of the gods.
'Now' is a moment I cannot regret -
right now, we have beaten the odds.

I don't buy into this mad human race.
Everyone's rushing to some distant place.
Everyone’s hoping some day they'll arrive.
I'm busy being alive.

I love uncertainty - I love the road,
I love the time spent with you.
I love not knowing the last episode,
I love what we're going through.

Don’t even know what's around the next bend.
Don't want to know, or to see.
One thing's for certain - I'll still be your friend,
Right now, that feels solid to me.

I don't buy into this mad human race.
Everyone's rushing to some distant place.
Everyone’s hoping some day they'll arrive.
I'm busy being alive.
