Staffa is a small island, not far from the Isle of Mull - it's where Fingal's Cave is.  Mrs Macdonald was the laird's wife, and someone dedicated this dance tune to her.  Since it's a reel, play it a couple of times, fast!  (The audio clip is straight through without repeats.).

Song collector Alexander Campbell wrote a setting of this comical poem about a piper and a triyodyan - which I think was what they would have called a village simpleton.  An ungainly lout, at any rate!  The tune is awkward and lumbering, but I have a certain affection for it - it's quite comical!  The last movement of my saxophone quartet, and a fitting ending.

He never guessed it would end up as a saxophone quartet today!  This is a totally different setting to the one he envisaged.  It's for soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones.Five movements in total. This is the first of them.
