You’ve all come across them in one form or another….mainly probably in caricatures of Victorian or Edwardian men in boldly striped sportswear lifting heavy weights or Victorian ladies elegantly waving their arms around(see photo) We found the idea of daily exercises in combination with utterly lovely tunes so intriguing that we decided to call our latest publication Calisthenics The music combines training of speed, thumb technique, interpretation. Short: another great fun and educational publication. The word calisthenics is derived from the Greek, kalos, beautiful; and sthenos, strength; the object of calisthenic exercises being to secure physical beauty by developing the limbs and muscles of the human frame, and making the joints flexible, thereby giving strength and power, and ensuring a graceful carriage, erect bearing, and freedom to the figure. In the words of the old Victorians: The highest refinement of that beauty is unattainable without splendour of activity and delicate strength. Exercise is now recognised to be as great a necessity in woman's education as in man's we are learning that many bodily defects and much of her weak health is attributable to the want of it; more especially in youth, when the frame is growing. Such exercises must, however, be carried out under a system; irregularly conducted, they do more harm than good. The constitution must be coaxed, not strained; the strength not unduly taxed, no over-fatigue ensuing; for exhaustion makes people look worn and old. The exertion must not be too violent, and the health and physical development of each pupil must be specially studied. Early morning or evening are the best times to select, but on no account immediately after a meal. The clothing should not be too warm, nor interfere in any way with the action of the limbs. A musical accompaniment will best preserve the necessary rhythm - the time, four or eight beats to a bar; failing this, the pupils should be taught to sing or count in concert, thereby keeping up their interest and zest. A castanet will, failing better means, help to mark the time with or without music. One of our aims is to revive these compositions and bring them to the attention of players and audiences.

From a distance it appeared as a glowing waterfall.This exciting work for horn choir, premiered at the 2015 International Horn Symphosium in Los Angeles, is a musical representation of this event. You can hear the hot embers rushing toward the cliff and then fall. The inspiration behind this tour de force for horn choir, it is by turns lyrical, rhythmic, and dramatic rushing toward an energetic conclusion.

These two dances are taken from a collection entitled Recueil de danseries, contenant presque toutes sortes de danses (“Collection of dances, containing almost every kind of dance�) published in Antwerp in 1583 by Pierre Phalèse Jnr (c.1545-1629). He was continuing the work of his father Pierre Phalèse the Elder (1510-1575) the most important publisher in the Low Countries during the 16th century. The piece known as Schiarazula Marazula appears towards the end of the collection and is rather a curious addition because it evokes the sound of street music rather than that of the court. However, it was an immensely popular dance during the 16th century and possibly written by Giorgio Mainerio, an Italian musician and composer. This music was meant for dancing and entertainment and musicians would often combine several dances to make a more substantial piece. In this arrangement, Schiarazula Marazula is paired with Ballo Anglese which appears near the beginning of the original publication. The music would have been played by any instruments that happened to be available. The dances still retain their freshness and charm today and are sure to be popular at any concerts, public recitals or end-of-semester events. This arrangement is for virtually any string ensemble and the single PDF file includes a full score and parts for violin 1, violin 2, viola (violin 3), cello and bass (combined), keyboard and simple percussion. Two additional melody part are provided in the treble and bass clefs and the chords (for optional guitar) are shown in both keyboard and cello-bass parts. In the spirit of the original publication, you can add to the melody line any other C-pitch instruments that happen to be available. Even the additional of a couple of recorders will enhance the sound. Alternatively, you can do opposite and create a pleasing contrast by omitting various instruments for certain sections. The audio demo will give you an idea how this might be achieved. The keyboard part is intended as a guide and when possible, the keyboard player should feel free to improvise around the part and the chords shown. A digital or acoustic harpsichord sounds more authentic than a piano. Most electronic keyboards have a harpsichord option. The optional percussion instruments used are similar to those found in elementary school music rooms and usually include a tambour or hand-held drum, antique (finger) cymbals, wood-blocks and tambourine. Two or three players can be used (but feel free to add more) and the parts can be interpreted quite freely. Dance music is intended to be fun, and we hope that this arrangement brings you just that.

The best piano teachers have never allowed this, but in many cases, so much time is wasted discussing and fixing these problems that all enthusiasm and momentum is lost for the student. What's needed is a new symbol that communicates clearly and immediately to the student what is being demanded by the music: not just notes, but also fingering. Elementary students who grow with the V system of hand positions move more quickly through their repertoire, because they don't waste as much time fixing problems, or worse, arguing with their teachers about why an awkward fingering is not allowed, even when they have correctly figured out the correct notes.     .

The third movement is about the play of light through barren tree branches.  It is called The Haunted Sonata because the melody that the sonata is based is practically invisible. It is there, but it is just like a ghost, you hear it out of the corner of your eye.

Plus three trombones. At last: Some new repertoire for the historical natural trumpet! This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome!  These arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change!

Groups will need all eight parts to be carefully synchronised through the rubato sections, and stay alert for the key changes, but audiences love the effect in concerts or out carolling.
