The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.
