This piece exists in two versions: Piano solo Guitar solo (without or with electronic sounds) The piano version has no huge secrets (to clarify: the pedal is used da capo al fine without interruption). The guitar version is written in three keys: E, G and A (Dorian). The performer may choose one or another score at their convenience. The guitar version can also use effects of all kinds, or amplifiers that are not always used in classical music. At the end of 2019 an album will be released on Spotify and other online music platforms with both versions of the piece (solo piano and acoustic guitar with electronic sounds). As an example of the amplitude that the composer expects from the performers: in this record production, the guitar signal is split in two parts, panned to the right and left, and different types of effects are applied to each channel (chorus, delay, reverb of different kinds and with different parameters). The original guitar signal is also in the center. Of course, there are also the electronic sounds themselves. Has the Rain a Father? was composed in Bremen (Germany) on March 17, 2019 (plus details to the piano part on March 27). Its duration is about 4:30. I asked some people about the wording of the title. Among the meaningful answers:   Which wording is better, Has the rain a Father? or Does the Rain have a father? (Bible, Job, 38:28). It will be used as the title of a music piece for piano. Has the Rain a Father? is slightly unusual, and thus is attention-grabbing, something you want in a title. It sounds more biblical, calling attention to the allusion. Composer’s Note - Growing into meOn a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. As is my usual style, I tend to allow the second players and less-prominent instruments a chance to shine, and in general shake up the usual orchestral hierarchy. (The second violins, for example, even get their own solo passage!)The wind parts are much more individualized, where the first part may have a completely different line than the second.A colleague who is a trombone player challenged me to write parts that sing for his instrument; hence the word dolce occurs in the low brass parts. It was a sunny Saturday morning in May when I recorded in my home a few of my favorite holiday songs, like Silent Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and other Christmas carols.After doing this, I asked myself, why don't I compose a new instrumental piano piece and submit it along with the other familiar demo examples. I imagined children playing in the snow, sledding down hills, their excitement on Christmas morning, and the wonderful spirit of the holiday season. After a little while I composed this piece. I then thought to myself; “I’ll call it CHRISTMAS FROLIC. Even though Nordstrom never used this piece on their Holiday CD, I performed it for audiences. I remember once telling a friend, “Here’s a new piece I composed called CHRISTMAS FROLIC, however, it can only be played during the Christmas season. My friend replied; “Robert, why don’t you just call it FROLIC, then you can play it all year long.The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings and appropriate musical terms for playing. This advanced intermediate piano solo can be played year around. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events and makes and excellent encore for professionals.It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for more advanced piano students. FROLIC was recorded as a piano selection in 1998 on Robert’s CD entitled PIANO & MEMORIES.
