This short composition, which lasts less than two minutes, will provide many students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long phrases, and to help them to continue to develop good intonation because many of the phrases cadence on a unison note. This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (7 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble’s extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. We have performed the Trumpet Quartet version of this composition for many church services, especially funerals, when we were asked to supply something more somber and introspective rather than the louder, more festive music which many people come to expect from a Trumpet Ensemble. At an early age he entered the Conservatorio dei poveri di Gesu Cristo, in Naples, where he received lessons from Gaetano Greco. Later he became a pupil of Alessandro Scarlatti at the Conservatorio di Sant’Onofrio. He is said to have succeeded Scarlatti in 1725 at Sant’Onofrio and to have remained there until 1742, when he succeeded Nicola Porpora as head of the Conservatorio di Santa Maria de Loreto, also in Naples. He held this post for thirteen years, until his death on September 30, 1755. His fame as a teacher was considerable, and, unlike his Neapolitan contemporaries, who attracted international notice with their operas, Francesco Durante achieved recognition through his church music, along with some vocal chamber and instrumental works. His concern was not quantity. To add an extra layer of challenge to the task, I challenged myself to try to create a fun and interesting piece incorporating as few additional techniques as possible (such as double stops, special effects, etc.), focusing almost exclusively on creating interesting, unadorned single lines in the two parts. This piece, based on the concept of old record players skipping between different sections of a record, was the result. Enjoy!

Siobhan is confident in her pursuit of becoming a well-known composer who is known for writing music for a variety of media. She is already undertaking this task by writing for a documentary and a potential game. Siobhan feels ready to leave and cannot wait to see what this next chapter brings her. She wrote this piece as a farewell to her lecturer of her entire RCS career, Dr Oliver Searle who she has admired and adored throughout her studies. Note from the composer: Dear Oliver, Surprise, I wrote this to say thanks to you, embarrassing I know :/ So as my last final effort to embarrass both of us I wrote this into my programme note. (Kind of cringey and, as I am writing this, I’m getting totes emosh) Thank you for being the best lecturer I could have ever asked for, thank you for being a great person who is caring, kind and someone who truly listens and teaches well. This is a disadvantage in this way, however, knowing large portions of the scale neck in one position will allow you to play a key throughout the fretboard with no gaps in notes. In otherwords, learning one ocatave scales can have concise music theory, but it's impossible to know the scale in every part of the neck completely that way. Features:1. Color coding. I don’t believe one can play fast before control over slow playing and expression is mastered.Our most natural instrument is our voice . Singing and playing this melody is a terrific way to bridge the gap between the metal flute and one’s voice. The outcome is an amazing resonance ,musical quality in the tone and natural phrasing.Moyse was asked what he thought the French School of flute playing was and he answered” being able to sound like other instruments”. We have to start with the first port of call – our voice.The words you can use for phrasing are ” love you , love you , love you , love you, love you so.” “I really love you so much” ” I really love you so” etc all the way through . You can make up your own.It is worth singing and playing this through. By that I mean play 2 notes, sing 2 and play 2 all the way through without interrupting the musical flow, resonance and tone quality. Great for practising going between singing and playing quickly.Love was a favourite word of Moyse and Wibb. I see why!. It innately has so much expression, warmth, opens up the mouth and in Moyse’s words “scoops the last spoonful of mayonnaise from the jar. ” You definitely can’t say it with “an ugly nasal voice”- Moyse quote.The tone has to have life and expression. I hear so often soft playing as the player blowing softly but that gives such a dull lifeless outcome.

A few years back, Nina Flyer asked me to write for her a piece of music that would contain or make reference to Jewish/Yiddish/Hebrew dance music and/or folk songs. The more I thought about it, the more difficult I realized the challenge would be. As best as I could tell, I had three options. Option one: I could set said dance music/songs for cello and piano, with the result being a series of arrangements: nice, but artlessly unoriginal (meaning dull). Option two: I could weave the tunes into a single narrative and in doing so write another version of Schlomo (a self-proclaimed Hebraic work for cello and orchestra by Ernst Bloch). Option three: I could make up my own ethnic-sounding melodies and either arrange them for cello and piano or weave them into some sort of Hebraic narrative: options one and two all over again. So I came up with option four. I selected four folk tunes (movements II, III, IV, and V) and composed a counter-melody to each. The first half of movements II, III, IV, and V set that counter-melody without any reference to the original folk tune. The second half of those movements then combines the counter-melody with the original tune (and thus the revelation, as the original tune is revealed). The generally two-part shape described above (excepting movement IV, which is A-B-A in structure) suggested Baroque binary dance form, and so I turned the piece into a sort of Baroque dance suite. It begins with a French Overture based on the counter-melodies of movement III and V, and concludes with a gigue based on the counter melodies of movements II and IV. The historical references are supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and I can only hope they will be taken that way.
