Rather than compose on the computer as I usually do, I wrote by hand as I determined the best four-part canonic treatment for each of the phrases of the chant. Composing this was akin to assembling a puzzle, both in mindset (this note fits best here) and addictive quality (need to finish this now!). Originally conceived as a short organ piece, I quickly chose to add the English text from the Hymnal 1982 then text directly from the Liber Usualis, a Catholic book of Gregorian chants commonly used until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). This piece is similar in style to an Italian Renaissance canzona or early German Baroque kanon. It should be performed with performance practice of those eras in mind, including lifts after dotted notes, metric accents, and minimal vibrato, especially at cadences. Lines that end in a melisma should be performed by singing the final vowel and placing the consonant at the release of the final melisma note. The first verse may be sung in unison or as a solo as printed below. The verses may be sung in alternatum (odd verses printed below: solo chant, even verses: choir). The first four verses form a complete anthem and the last two verses are suitable as a Communion anthem, or all six may be sung. The SSA Latin version was adapted from the original SATB version for the women of the Hillcrest High School choral program under the direction of Dr. Khristina Motley in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It reduces the original four-voice setting to three voices without sacrificing any canonic entrances. This SSA English version is also suitable for performance by an advanced middle school choral ensemble or for TTB men.Also available as an organ solo or in Latin. With Nightfall, I wanted to capture the time at night when one is alone with his thoughts.  Silences between thoughts can become almost deafening in their volume.  In this time of ambiguity between sleep and wakefulness, the mind is allowed to wander into many strange and sometimes frightening regions.Beyond the main motivic material--the minor 6th pattern and various harmonizations of the chromatic scale, I found that I was using combinations of A minor (actually octatonic) and B Lydian as dual tonal centers of this piece.  Since it was written for solo piano, I decided to let the compositional process be open-ended; some of what is written here is the result of improvisation, followed by painstaking revision. You may notice a touch of Chopin in the Nocturne sections, although this nocturne is a bit creepier than the Chopin.

The young Eubie taught himself the organ after his parents put a $75 organ in their home for 25 cents per week (which would take them almost 6 years to pay off). By the age of 15 was playing piano in Baltimore's night clubs, holding a regular job at Agnes Shelton's sporting house. Blake was already an exceptional pianist by the early 1900's, and he had to simplify his music drastically to get it published. Blake was among the pioneers of ragtime, however he was often too far ahead of his time. He released two rags (Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz) in the same year which Scott Joplin released his Maple Leaf Rag. Unfortunately for Blake, the competition was too strong. Part of the reason for Blake's Charleston Rag and his Baltimore Buzz not making the big time may have been due to Blake the progressive nature of his sound. People found it hard to digest his music, especially the publishers. Bugle Call Rag was composed in 1916 with Carey Morgan. It was one of many patriotic selections written by composers during the World War I era. This delightful piece uses bugle calls and quotes There’ll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight.A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. In order to capture the attention of the diverse types of learners in my orchestra I composed this piece with the intention of the students writing a background story (or liner notes) for the work. Using familiar themes from the French tune Il est né le Divin Enfant (in a minor key) and a portion of the Irish ballad Star of the County Down I created an interesting pirate sounding shanty. The title, Ghost Ship’s Call, is a guideline for this write your own adventure piece. The students can explore different ideas for the harmonic and melodic changes in the music.
