Pastoral Symphony is the 13th movement in Handel's Messiah.  This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus.  The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass.  Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari -  who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime.  Scored for 2 altos, bass, optional contra alto in G, and contrabass flutes.  There is an optional cello part that doubles the contrabass.Duration: 2.5 minutes.

The rhythmic piece begins with a section of strummed chords that work harmonies off of varying the fingerings to a basic chord pattern. The progression includes some half barres on the first and third frets. A middle section slows the tempo down, and sets a contrasting mood with a melody that moves over the top of a step wise bass line. The piece energetically rerturns to the strumming section and ends in a scalar flourish with lots of slurs to set up the final chords.

Mountains are naturally beautiful especially at sunrise and sunset where the sun seems to change the color at their summits.  This phenomenon may only last a short time twice a day, but it it worthwhile to see.  To be on the mountaintop when this occurs is like living in a painting.  This song captures the artistry and sensations of living in these moments.  A lone lyrical melody begins the work, adding supporting harmonies afterward.  The melody evolves into a folk-like structure that returns to its ominous original.  The driving winds and cold weather are further illustrated in the transition leading to recapitulations of the previous sections.  With quiet respite the work effortlessly floats away, seeemingly into the air.

Personent hodie is a Christmas carol originally published in the 1582 Finnish song book Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 Medieval songs with Latin texts collected by Jacobus Finno (Jaakko Suomalainen), a Swedish Lutheran cleric, and published by T.P. Rutha. The carol became more prominent in England after being arranged for unison voices and orchestra in 1916 by Gustav Holst (1874–1934), where in its organ reduction it is often used as a processional hymn in church and cathedral services.
