An 19th century English hymnwriter took a 13th century Easter tune he found in a 16th century Finnish song collection and turned it into a tribute to a legendary 10th century Bohemian nobleman. (Bohemia today is in the Czech Republic.) Turns out Wenceslas, around whom a cult developed in his native land and, inexplicably, in England, wasn't really a king, so Holy Roman Emperor Otto made him an honorary one after his death, since he was sunch a king of a guy.All that notwithstanding, it's still a pretty good Christmas carol for a brass quintet.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. This piece was originally to be two separate works, but I saw that the two parts would combine nicely. The inspiration for the first part came from listening to a lot of Claude Debussy's Impressionist pieces, and thinking of the more relaxed time of very late evenings, of which I am particularly fond. The second part is a much more energetic section that was inspired by seeing a concert of Los Romeros guitar quartet, and especially seeing and hearing Pepe Romero play. The song was first introduced as an instrumental theme in the 1970 film Love Story after the film's distributor, Paramount Pictures, rejected the first set of lyrics that were written. Andy Williams eventually recorded the new lyrics and took the song to number nine on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 and number one on their Easy Listening chart.

This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2013. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boss RC-30 loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boomerang III, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: the head melody is a basic lydian dominant motif that gets displaced forwards or backwards by a sixteenth note on each iteration. In Nashville Number System, we call this sort of syncopation a push, which inspired the title. This idea transitions into a B solo section with a latin songo groove. This is a great tune for practicing tight rhythmic syncopation, or for developing solo ideas on modal scales!With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass (plays the bottom line of loop 2 only) or guitar/keyboards (read the chord symbols as a lead-sheet). In this arrangement for trombone quintet, the melody is predominantly in the first and 2nd parts, with the range on the first part up to b1 above the staff and the second trombone goes to a1 above the staff. This song is often performed without the verse, which precedes the chorus, but is included in this arrangement, set apart with a lighter texture and slower tempo. The stretching of pulse in the first measure can be omitted if the cohesiveness of the ensemble dictates. The familiar chorus should have a comfortable swing feel.
