Minuetto e Trio The composer and harpsichordist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy was born in Paris in 1744, and died in 1824 in Villers-sur-Mer in Normandie. She married Jacques Brillon de Jouy 22 years her senior,and had two daughters, Cunégonde and Aldegonde, Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy had a salon in Passy whose guests included the violinist Jean-Pierre Pagin and cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitum�, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.

It was in the process of preparing the publication of the works of Demersseman and of Ali Ben Sou Alle that suggested to me the idea of the typical 19th century practice of the Fantasy and Variations on well-known themes.The saxophone lends itself perfectly for this stylistic exercise. I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously.My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic “ Ah ça ira ! �, after having seen the famous sequence of “Si Versailles l’était conté� where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean Françaix.I added at the end “ La Carmagnole � and the famous “ Il pleut bergère � a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach.This isn’t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’ The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the  Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music. There are 5 movements, Gravement, Allemande Gayment, lentement, Gavotte en rondeau & Gayment. Players of Intermediate standard will enjoy playing this music. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added.  Players should feel free to add their own.  For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

The ebb and flow of the sea is brought to mind by rising and falling musical phrase. The second section is a playful dance written in 7/8 meter. All the instruments get a chance to play the uplifting melody.
