The original key for this was in E major, and while that is a very good key for the guitar, this arrangement seemed richer in the key of D, with the guitar tuning the 6th string down to D. Should anyone want to perform this in E, the guitarist would need to used a capo at the second fret, and the vocal line would be sung a whole step higher.     While this work was written for soprano singer, this arrangement could also be performed instrumentally with either flute, violin, or oboe playing the vocal part. Aggressively insistentThe genesis of this diminutive composition, and its subsequent title Six Forays for Flute and Clarinet had its inception at a dinner party held by flutist, Emily McKay. Jeremy and Emily were planning a collaboration including a CD recording featuring flute and clarinet music, and wanted me to compose a piece for them. I decided against a formal plan, and began in a sense, to unravel sound organization from the inside out. Imagining myself an audience participant, I wanted to hear clarity through brevity. I definitely did not want to impose gimmickry, but did choose to play with slight pitch bending-something to arouse the listener, but not to bore her with 20th century musical clichés. The result is a six-movement piece, around six minutes long. Organizing the music through titles allows for imagination for both the listener and the performers.Beauty of tone, magnificent musicianship, and virtuosity-these qualities in instrumentalists inspire all who create music. I am very grateful to Emily McKay and Jeremy Reynolds for commissioning me to write this music for them.

Humble Vale is part of the Hancock Hymnal: 1850 compiled by Deborah Rentz Moore.The most obvious element in this beautiful melody is the predominance of the pentatonic mode. The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€�sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€�canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€�flat major chord. It is my intention that these interludes provide a smooth and slithery connection from one movement into the next. Enjoy!!!The work is dedicated to Miles Davis. His 1963 LP/CD Seven Steps To Heaven is a seminal recording for all music lovers. It made a huge impression on me when I was a teenager in São Paulo, Brazil. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1462720). This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it The Jig of the Ship. Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. In writing this piece, I researched the musical history of St. David’s Hall. Unfortunately, it has proven very difficult to find specific songs/pieces from some of the key events (the only clip I could find was the Cory Band playing John Mile’s Music), so I focused on brass bands and Wales.The pieces incorporates Men of Harlech (Rhyfelgyrch Gwŷr Harlech), Land of My Fathers (Hen Wlad fy Nhadau) and Philip Sparke’s The Year of the Dragon. Growing up with brass band, I heard Men of Harlech a lot and it has always been my “go to� Welsh piece. Land of My Fathers is the unofficial anthem of Wales. As for The Year of the Dragon, it was used both times that St. David’s Hall has hosted the European Brass Band Championships: it was used as the set test pieces in 1986 for Desford Colliery Dowty Band’s historic victory (under Howard Snell) and as the own choice test piece in 1992 as part of Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) Band’s winning performances (again under Howard Snell). The Year of the Dragon is also a popular piece of music in the brass-band world and has much significance to me personally.The name of piece comes from the GPS location of St. David’s Hall (51.48022° N, 3.17653° W), rounded to the nearest integer: the actual location of 51° N, 3° W is just off of the A378 in North Curry in Taunton, Somerset, England. The competition stipulated that the fanfare was to be composed for a maximum of five standard brass band instruments and so was written for 2 Cornets, Tenor Horn, Trombone or Euphonium and Eb Bass. An additional score and parts have been provided for a more traditional brass quintet set up.
