My fascination with the culture of the Navajo Native Americans and their healing ceremonies based on harmony and beauty motivated me to listen to ethnographic recordings of their songs, which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. A number of these songs inspired me to create two works for different instrumental ensembles for students at the Conservatoire de Versailles. Both pieces represent miniature versions of ceremonial events. Thierry PécouThierry Pécou's interest in ethnomusicology is reflected in this piece. He was inspired by the culture and especially by the traditional healing ceremonies of the Navajo Native Americans which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. Pécou composed his miniature version of this ceremonial event for the students of the Conservatoire de Versailles. The piece is also available as a version for flauto traverse and treble recorder.

The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow.  I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois.  The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul.  I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise. The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter.  The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories.  The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future.  The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed.  The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work – despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal … [Once upon a time …] to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. He suggested it as a quintet piece (he liked us mostly because we played some of his favorite Dixieland tunes). The result is, well, at least a little bit weird. The original haunting Pat Metheny recording was played on electric sitar, with a high-speed snare drum providing train effect. I wanted to achieve the same thing, so the horns take care of it throughout the piece (with tuba providing it from start to finish). And the song needed a train horn for effect. I wanted to know what chord a train whistle blew, and the Internet told me it was a ninth chord. There was no time for rehearsal so I kept the parts fairly contained in their roles. The melody stays in Violin 1 and faithfully follows Eartha Kitt's vocals. I also play jazz violin so I have added slurs that help to encourage the swing feel. The cello sticks to the famous bass line and switches to pizzicato in the middle 8. Violin 2 and Viola fill in the off beat harmony and the viola adds in the clarinet line from the Eartha Kitt recording in the second half of the arrangement. There are a couple of trickier transition bars, from a speed perspective, where all parts play semiquavers. I am a string player and teacher. I decided to dedicate some of my compositions to this issue. This is the second composition with that title. This three movements composition include: i. Basiliscus (Basilisk) - Legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance; ii. Unicornis (Unicorn) - Legendary animal that resembles a white horse with a spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. Commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin; iii. Centaurus (Cenaturo)  - Member of a composite race of creatures, part human and part horse. This work was requested to be premiered by the project XL with Telmo Marques (piano)  e Sérgio Carolino (Tuba). Was composed between January and March 2012.

Based off an old, indie record of classic rock orchestral covers that my roommate showed me back in my college days. This arrangement is a prime example of genre-blending and will truly excite your audience. The intro is a ballad which quickly moves into the verse which is in a baroque/classical style with the piccolo trumpet playing the melody. The choruses are in a half-time rock style, which is very contrasting to the verses. The bridge is also in a rock style but it adds a bunch of mixed meters in order to shake things up! The arrangement can split up between trumpets and flugelhorns and it is highly suggested that a drummer plays along.
