Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s most widely known folk song, and one that has been popularly suggested as a potential national anthem.The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker (swagman) making a drink of tea at a bush camp (billy) and stealing a sheep (jumbuck) to eat. When the sheep’s owner (squatter) arrives with three police officers (troopers) to arrest the worker, he drowns himself in a small lake (billabong) and goes on to haunt the site.The tune is most probably based on the traditional Scottish song Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea.The original lyrics were written in 1895 by the poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson, and it was first published as sheet music in 1903.This is a straightforward but useful arrangement for concert band and SATB Choir. Then, while playing in a summer band, I heard several flute players say they don't like playing piccolo unless it is just for short passages. That gave me the idea of a suite with small movements where I could implement my musical ideas. Each movement in this mini suite is a little sample of what the piccolo can do: arpeggio passages, imitation of birds, sweet melodies, chromatic runs, and of course, super high notes while changing meter.

Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing.
