Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8322-E Composed by David Conte. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st Century, Americana, Children, Creation/Nature, Hope/Assurance. Instrument part. 15 pages. Duration 5 minutes, 42 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8322-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8322-E). UPC: 600313483226. English. The three a cappella choral pieces that comprise “A Whitman Triptych†were composed between 2012 and 2014. O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. “What is the Grass?†is also an adaptation of a much longer poem, one of Whitman’s deepest, and most mysterious. The poem begins as a child-like meditation on grass; as hope, as an embodiment of new life and new growth in the plant world. Then suddenly there is a somber turn with the line “And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.†Here Whitman enters an extended mediation on how grass connects life and death, informed by his experiences in the Civil War. Hope returns with the line: “They are alive and well somewhere,†leading to the mysterious final line: “And to die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier…†Here Whitman affirms that death can be an initiation into a broader participation of existence. In the words of poet Ivan M. Granger, Whitman offers a “Zen-like riddle that doesn’t offer an answer so much as a pathway of questioning.†My musical setting follows Whitman’s exploration, first taking a child’s point of view, expressed with lilting melodies set in a lively compound meter. The entry of the tenor soloist indicates a change of mood to the serious. The first mood returns, leading to a climax on the words “And led forward life…â€, set in 9-part harmony. The mood turns reverent, as the tenor soloist intones: “All goes onward and outward; nothing collapses.†The piece ends with a tone of gentle, slightly ironic questioning. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

David Warin Solomons #723318. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1122168). Many years before Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats I created my own setting of TS Eliot's Song of the Jellicles (from Old Possum's book of practical cats). Originally it was intended for choir, but the estate of T S Eliot would not let me use the poem itself as a choral piece. However, they did allow me to use the word Jellicle in my instrumental titles. Each version follows the rhythms of the T S Eliot poem. Performers: The Budapest wind quartet, comprising Flute: Ildikó Szabady Oboe: Márton Belek Clarinet: Hunor Egyed Bassoon: Kristóf Szilágyi.

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1133558 By Rush. By Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee. Arranged by John La Barbera. Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Jazz,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 88 pages. Deaver Enterprises ASCAP #733698. Published by Deaver Enterprises ASCAP (A0.1133558). Neil Peart asked me to arrange “YYZ†for the 2008 Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in New York City. Knowing “Rush†fans would be in attendance and super tuned into the chart, we discussed some key moments in the composition that should remain true to the original and those where I could take some license. Like many of my arrangements for Buddy Rich, this is a “high energy†chart that is a real crowd pleaser with plenty of space to open it up for the drums and bass to be featured. Almost any instrument can be substituted for the soprano solo. The chart is very challenging and a strong trumpet section is important as is a really tight rhythm section. Alto 1 plays soprano sax throughout and the configuration is 5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 3 Trombones (3rd is Bass), Guitar (optional) Electric Keyboard, Bass & Drums.

Violin Duet Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1410764 By Justin K. Reeve. By Justin K. Reeve. 21st Century,New Age. 6 pages. Justin Kenlon Reeve #993160. Published by Justin Kenlon Reeve (A0.1410764). An original piano/instrumental song. Somehow it reminds me of the last days of spring, a bittersweet farewell to the end of the early blooms. Can the rose of summer fade,The bright and blooming rose?Shall winter sweep the glade,Where its tender beauty blows? There is perfume in the air,And it steals from the opening flower; But the winds shall rudely tearThe treasures of field and bower. They fade, — how soon they fade,The flowers of earth and sky!Was all that beauty made,To smile a moment and die?O, will not the colors stay,That glow in the west at even,And the hues of the rising dayBe ever the charm of heaven?O, let me not think the flowersShall ever be borne awayFrom the full and loaded bowers,Where they welcome the early day.I would not indulge one thought,That a rose or a cheek could wither; But believe their colors, caughtFrom heaven, shall be wafted thither.– James Gates Percival.

Small Ensemble Cello,Guitar,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576653 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 10 pages. David Warin Solomons #51133. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576653). Very sad poem by Paul Maertens about a child he came to know from his medical practice. The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others.  This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness.  The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello.  (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics)  The pdf file contains score and parts.  An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site. It is sung in French, but for convenience I am providing an English translation below (not for performance purposes). Réveille-toi, mon gars!  Your mummy, little chap, did not want you. Now you turn on the taps and watch the water flow, but you don't want to grab it. Your mummy didn't admit she was expecting. Your daddy isn't yours and your mummy, out of shame, hid you in her breasts. You were born but you weren't given a life. You were rocked to sleep because you weren't supposed to be heard. Your mummy didn't look into your eyes, your smiles got no response. You weren't loved. You were forbidden to live. Your mummy could not bear the reproach your eyes shot at her, and in order to flee you all the more she made you into this object, this forgotten thing, a clean and faithful dog that you wash and feed. Now you roll your toy car around, without playing or smiling or speaking. Your mummy has gone and you didn't cry. You've left your car somewhere and you arrange the cubes in front of you, always in the same order, simply, without anguish, without happiness. You are not living , little one. Wake up little chap!

Celtic Harp,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1341976 By Stephanie Bennett. By Traditional Norwegian. Arranged by Stephanie Bennett. Christmas,Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. 9 pages. Harpworld Music Co. #927489. Published by Harpworld Music Co. (A0.1341976). Suitable for lever harps or pedal harps. This song, being a traditional tune from Norway, makes me imagine a wintry scene. So it seems especially apt for December celebrations, which is when I usually play it.  But it’s perfectly appropriate any time of year! The sound is interesting to American ears due to the use of the Lydian mode. It’s based on F, but with B naturals (instead of B flats as in F Major)! There are no lever or pedal changes. The Harp I part (with the melody) is intermediate, and the Harp II part (the accompaniment) is super easy. It would be a fun song for a teacher and student to play together.  You can easily turn this duet into a trio by having Harp III take over the left-hand parts of Harp I.
