You may be familiar with this Bob Dylan song, or perhaps the popular Joan Baez cover; it was Baez's version that I first heard, and I was immediately struck by the juxtaposition of the sweetly lilting vocal line (and gently strumming guitar accompaniment) with the apocalyptic text. The words, while strange and surreal, seemed to perfectly depict the sense of unrest and violence that fills our world today. The intimacy of the repeated farewells to a loved one while the world literally falls apart feels especially poignant; the almost absurd contrast between lines like I'll see you in a while and the sky is falling reminds me of the feeling of wanting to draw inward and deny the frightening things happening around us while also being unable to ignore them. I began imagining what the music would sound like if it reflected the sense of chaos and destruction of Dylan's poetry, and commissioned Melissa Dunphy to compose such an arrangement for voice and viola.

Thanks, John.  English singer Joe Cocker released a version of the song on his album I Can Stand a Little Rain.  Cocker's version was released as a single in November 1974.  It became Cocker's highest-charting solo hit, peaking at number five on the United States' Billboard Hot 100.  Billy Preston wrote You Are So Beautiful with one of his regular collaborators, Bruce Fisher.  Preston's inspiration was his mother, who worked as a stage actress.  According to his friend Sam Moore (who had assumed it was a standard love song), Preston was appalled to learn that Moore was using the song as a means to attract young women each time he sang it in concert.  In Moore's description, Preston told him: That song's about my mother!.

The anthem was adopted in 1964. Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! One of the soundtracks that I get asked to perform most regularly is Test Drive by John Powell. This is one of the earlier transcriptions I wrote, and I often use it as a piece to illustrate the difference between different organs. It’s quite useful to have one piece to use as a comparison point, so I post little videos of this wherever I’m playing to demonstrate how radically different the same piece of music can sound depending on the kind of instrument. For me, this piece feels like an instant serotonin boost. There is a great crescendo where you get to take the organ from relatively quiet to earth-shatteringly loud over the course of about 30 seconds, and I always say that playing that part feels a bit like flying a dragon! - Anna Lapwood
