The Ritz Hotel referred to is just outside Mayfair, adjacent to Green Park. The nightingale, a migrant songbird, is celebrated in literature and music for the beauty of its song. It favours rural habitats and is unlikely to be heard in Central London. The song has since become a standard, being recorded by Bing Crosby (recorded 20 December 1940). Frank Sinatra in London in June 1962, Rod Stewart on the 2004 album Stardust: The Great American Songbook 3.

Beverly Kenney recorded It's a Most Unusual Day in 1957 for her album Beverly Kenney sings for Playboys which is featured in a Lincoln automobile commercial for television as of late 2021. The original arrangement was in 3/4 time. This is a swing version.

Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem in 1933 and recorded it that year. The original handwritten lyrics, along with a painting by Ted Koehler, were featured on the US version of Antiques Roadshow on January 24, 2011, where they were appraised for between $50,000 and $100,000. The lyrics show a number of crossings out and corrections.

The song has been covered by many artists including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Many versions of the song charted in 1950, but the biggest was by Red Foley. His recording, produced at Castle Studio by Owen Bradley, was released by Decca Records as catalog number 46205. The record first reached the Billboard charts on January 13, 1950, and lasted 15 weeks on the chart, peaking at number one.

Stella by Starlight is one of the most popular standards, ranked number 10 by the website jazzstandards.com. Its May 1947 recording by Harry James and his orchestra reached the 21st place in the pop charts. Two months later, the recording by Frank Sinatra with Axel Stordahl and his orchestra also rose to the 21st position. This arrangement includes the lyrics.

In 2017 I was invited to compose music for two of Australia's most outstanding musicians - mezzo-soprano Jenny Duck-Chong, and flautist Sally Walker. The challenge of composing for a combination in which the range of the voice is lower than that of the instrument lead me to choose Psalms as texts. Neither part is really an accompaniment, but both parts feature as equals, and a model for the music was the notion of chanted Psalms with instrumental descant. The texts come form Psalms 137, 62 and 150.

Unlike much of what you'll find out in the world of cheap gig music, this was in fact written BY a string player who has played in symphony orchestras, rock bands, and everything in between; who knows what gigging as a quartet looks like, but also what will wow your audiences without requiring weeks of rehearsal to prepare. So leave your days of sight-reading through piano scores behind and give your quartet some firepower with this hard hitting chart, that will surely enable your ensemble to do at least a little justice to this legendarily emotional banger from Ireland's finest! Bono's soaring vocal melodies on this tune offer more than enough material on their own to tug at an audience's heartstrings, but in this chart you'll also find faithful adaptations of the iconic guitar & bass parts (performed by cello & viola) that truly make this song one of a kind. Using extended string techniques like chopping & strum bowing, you'll feel as if you're rocking out with the band... with no need to hire those annoying extra musicians. But as we all know, strings have much more to offer dynamically than simply plodding along mimicking a rock band, so I've taken several select moments in this chart to break away briefly from those driving grooves into more open, contemplative textures, truly allowing this instrumentation to shine in its own unique way. All of that said, maybe rhythmic string playing isn't your thing and you just need a chart that classical string players can read through on a cocktail gig where the buyer clearly doesn't pay attention to the lyrical content of their song requests. If that's the case, I've provided a couple alternate figures at the back of the book that can be used to replace the percussive stuff in the viola part, making it much simpler without sacrificing too much of the energy. OR if you want to go even further, maybe you DO want to hire that band after all so you can just relax and play some melody lines. Lucky for you I have included a rhythm section lead sheet as part of the music packet, so that any auxiliary musicians you want to add in will be able to follow along with ease.
