This is a composition about Autism, which affects a member of our family, Joshua, who despite his condition has remarkable and wonderful qualities, as do his immediate family who, it’s fair to say have been to hell and back. I personally, sometimes have problems coping with the best of people and can be most intolerant sometimes but my amazing wife manages somehow to cope with me (most of the time). However, the sort of problems and challenges families with autistic children face daily, weekly, yearly is simply herioc and very underestimated. Anyway music is the only thing I seem to be half decent at so I dedicate this piece to Josh who I know one day will be perfect. The piece begins and ends with a stride style novelty piano tune and has sad and emotional themes and modulations throughout. There is a brief minor melt down depicted in the music and interaction issues but there is (has to be) a nice jolly happy ending which is the rag/stride style.

Hope is such a powerful thing that can push us through the toughest of times. In this poem, Emily Dickinson calls hope a feathered thing. It perches in the soul and sings without stoping. The singing is at the loudest when things are at their worst. Although hope is the central theme to the poem, the harsh conditions that are described in the poem was the driving force while writing the music. Creating a sound for the chillest day and the storm that could not abash the little bird was what really inspired me to write this piece. Something that stood out for me, was the use of dashes that breaks up the poem. I used rests to create these breaks. These rests are very deliberate to show these pauses of contemplation, almost struggling for the right words to describe a complex subject such as hope. At first the rests felt like a hindrance, where it felt natural for the music to flow, but now I cannot imagine the piece without it.

It's built on John LaBarbera's down-tempo ballad version for the Buddy Rich big band. Trombonists know this one for two features: a gorgeous but challenging bass 'bone solo, and a tricky but gorgeous 'bone section soli. Although this was written on a 7-string, it also translates very well on a 6-string; there are only 2 passages that require the low Bb string, and these will sound fine taken up an octave. If you want to try this on a standard violin, well... good luck with the 5-note chords!I realize we extended-range violinists are few & far between, but if you (like me) appreciate the unique ability of this instrument to cover bass substitutions, chord melodies, and other roles that were previously thought exclusive to fretted/keyed instruments, this arrangement is an excellent demonstration of some of the really cool ways that you can bring a melody to life without the need for any effects or accompaniment. It is not for the faint of heart, and will definitely take some practicing, but if you can tackle the harmony this is a chart that is guaranteed to impress any jazz-nerd in the room... or your money back!*A challenging, yet elegant take on one of my favorite jazz ballads, this arrangement is great for showing off your jazz chops as a soloist, but can also work great as background music at one of those weddings or cocktail parties where someone decided it would be a hip idea to have an electric violinist... by themself...without any suggestions on repertoire (don't lie, we've all done at least one of these). We were in the midst of a vast economic crisis leaving millions in poverty, racism had once again found its foothold in the foreground of US culture, climate change had decimated the west coast in flames while southern coastal cities were being bombarded with floods from storms. We have also been forced to see the ugliness of domestic terrorists establishing themselves in the hopes of hurting their fellow citizens. However, these issues pale in comparison to the utter devastation we have faced from COVID-19. As I write this note, we are just shy of nearly a quarter of a million people having senselessly died from COVID-19. The utter failure we’ve had in leadership and lack of empathy from our fellow citizens have caused countless families to now have empty seats at their table. There was no need for this. Hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children have died from means that could have been completely preventable. When I was asked to write this piece, I wanted to come up with a simple concept as an elegy to those lost to the virus. A simple question arose; What will we say? 50 years from now, how will we answer to those younger generations while we collectively sat by and did nothing to help each other? How are we going to excuse letting the rot that has sunk in go unpunished? How do we defend the indefensible? This question haunts me. The music you will hear channels my answer to that question. There is no true resolution. There is no happy ending. When we have finally moved on past this pandemic, we are still left in the wake of hundreds of thousands of dead citizens. One day it will hit us all how many lives we really lost. So I ask this; while you listen, reflect on every individual who suffered at the hands that did not act. Allow yourself to absorb the true gravity of what we have experienced. Give those victims a few minutes of your time. When the time comes for you to be asked, what will you say?

Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGB1239). “Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, ‘rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ This passage from John, chapter 7, illustrates faith in the wonderfully descriptive imagery of a small brook, trickling gently along its stony, wooded path. Gradually it becomes deeper and more active as it flows into a stream, then finally into a vital, rushing river. In this original composition for 3 or 5 octaves, handbells describe the scenario, starting with a simple melody surrounded by quiet randomly malleted bells, followed by a gently flowing section of moving LV bass underneath the treble melody. Gradually, the music develops into a strong, churning section of LV sixteenth notes, the melody above becoming more and more complex. As the piece draws to a close, it returns to the calmer, gentler sounds of the beginning. Living Water is a creative and thoughtful interpretation of the passage from John, and is appropriate in concert or worship when the focus is on faith and belief.

It’s a terrific science fiction/horror movie set on a large spaceship, with a predatory creature who is hunting down the human crew one by one. In the interview, Scott talked about the fact that there were scenes he wanted to film and effects he wanted to use, but his small budget prevented him from doing so. Instead, he was forced to make do with limited time and materials. Alien became a hit, and Scott went on to direct blockbusters like Gladiator and Hannibal.What stuck with me was what Scott said about creativity. It is his opinion that the budgetary constraints under which he operated when making Alien forced him to explore ideas and methods he wouldn’t have otherwise considered. Even though he would later make movies with ten times the budget, he’s extremely proud of what he and his team did with far more limited resources.When I started writing My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, I decided to give myself a big constraint: I would only be allowed to use the white keys of the piano. This is very different for me; I usually throw in some juicy harmonies. It was an interesting process, and I have to say that I agree with Ridley Scott: limits spark creativity. I’m going to look for other ways to apply this principle.I did go over budget slightly, and used one black key. Every flock has its black sheep, right?

The song uses very repetitive rhythmic patterns to make beginner guitar players feel comfortable, but offers challenges in the melody lines that complete the harmony, as they shift into higher positions on the fretboard. There are also two guitar solos that aren't overly technically challenging to your more ambitious players. Even though the title suggests it would be a delightful addition to your winter concert repertoire, White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes is a fun and accessible piece to play all year round.

I wanted to write something a bit simpler which is how this piece came about. I remember one of my composition lecturers teaching us how to write a melody with a strong structure that a lot of film composers use for film scores. It was a really good way to write something quickly and it allowed me to come up with this piece a lot quicker than the other ones. While the overall structure of the piece is important to have a balance between repetition and variation as well as new ideas, the smaller structure of a melody is quite important too for the same reasons. You don’t want to just repeat the same melody over and over again or else it gets boring, but you also don’t want to just have 10 different melodic ideas because then the idea of the piece becomes lost and it’s hard to follow where it’s going.As for the name of the piece, I came up with it after I had written it so it didn’t influence the composition process in any way. I listened back to the piece a few times to come up some ideas and write some different names down but this word stood out to me. It has a gentle feel and a kind of curious mood to it as well.
