The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. Both of these movements are fairly short and unlikely to be performed unless the entire piece is being performed, so I bundled them together. Con Mortuis functions as the final Promenade for the whole piece, and features high tremolos and the harp, which made for some transcription challenges. The first oboe part is quite difficult, and the high octave can be omitted if necessary.

Despite the seeming simplicity of the parts, this is definitely one of the most challenges I've had in making a multi-track recording. It's arranged with an advanced college/professional group in mind, and all parts will need great amounts of control in order to play this musically. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi.

When approaching how to arrange this piece, the biggest challenge was the motor rhythm of the repeated eighth notes constantly present in the string parts. It is also occasionally present in the original bassoon parts, however, and is playable if the piece is taken at a more conservative tempo. Double-tonguing certainly makes it possible at faster speeds, but having an entire ensemble that can do it is an unlikely scenario. Leaving it out completely made for a much less exciting arrangement. As such, I've tried to spread those passages among all the parts so that no one part had to do it for too long a stretch at a time. Also, the option to replace the eighth notes with quarter notes is present in all the parts - that can be done uniformly throughout the ensemble, only for players that need it, or even would be fine if players who can mostly keep up with the tonguing need just a measure or two break. As typical in my large transcriptions, all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi in two parts. I did my best to keep up with the tonguing in the layered recording attached, and, as always, keep in mind that I'm an oboist, and please forgive my inelegant attempt at what is a very standard and challenging bassoon excerpt.

Published by Erik Cole (A0.996139). A double reed transcription of the Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda, made famous by Disney's Fantasia. The Night section has been cut, as it's the least famous and included many string techniques that weren't very practical for winds to mimic, but it is otherwise true to the original. The 3rd parts are significantly easier than the others, but it is a challenging piece to take up to tempo, regardless. All oboe and bassoon parts are divisi. I was pleasantly surprised at how well almost all of it worked, especially after lowering the key to an easier C/F major which suits the oboe/bassoon range much better. The numerous rubatos/tempo changes were tough to accurately portray in a multi-track recording done to a click track, but I thought it generally came out well without too many inconsistencies. It's a very fun piece to play if your group is up to the challenge.
