Andrés Ballesteros (2010, ed. 2016; ASCAP)I wrote Sin Tregua in response to the ongoing drug war being waged in Mexico. After years of war, the government has proved ineffective and unwilling to deal with the violence. The government is a corrupted version of what was intended, so it seemed only fitting to musically corrupt the anthem that is supposed to represent our country. The music does this by bringing out the militaristic rhythms of the original but twisting the harmony out of shape into harsh dissonances, just as our country has been twisted out of shape. The melody of the national anthem never makes it past it's high point, instead falling apart back into the disorganized chaos it can't seem to escape. This piece is a short piece for advanced ensembles looking to include high-energy, slightly Ives-ian music. It could fit into programs featuring music about Latin America or by Latin American composers, concerts dealing with political issues, or many other contexts.Parts details:Parts for Violin I (4 pages), Violin II (3 pages), Viola (3 pages), Cello (3 pages)Score is available separately.Advanced level; appropriate for college ensembles or professional groups. 2'30
