Jmsgu3 #3492565. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549392). Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore. Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is essential to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded.

String Trio Cello,Viola,Violin - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1282116 Composed by Francesco Landini, 14th Century. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Early Music,Historic,Medieval,Wedding. 13 pages. Jmsgu3 #873388. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1282116). Landini was a leading composer of 14th-century Italy, famed during his lifetime for his musical memory, skill in improvisation, and virtuosity on the organetto, or portative organ, as well as for his compositions. Landini was blinded in childhood by smallpox.  His blindness did not prevent him from becoming a highly skilled and renowned musician, composer, and instrument maker. In fact, his blindness may have contributed to his prodigious memory and great skill at improvisation. He was crowned with a laurel wreath as the winner of a poetical contest at Venice in 1364.  Landini's output, preserved in the Squarcialupi Codex, represents almost a quarter of all surviving 14th-century Italian music. He was by far the most famous composer in Italy and is considered one of the most revered composers of the second half of the 14th century.Landini's music is characterized by lyrical, songlike melodies that possess an easy-flowing grace and are charmingly harmonized. He was the foremost exponent of the Italian Trecento style, sometimes called the Italian ars nova. His output was almost exclusively secular, and he is known for his ballate and madrigals, which were popular forms of Italian secular song. He is assumed to have written his own texts for many of his works.Francesco Landini's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, secular themes, and unique rhythms, which set him apart from his contemporaries and contributed to his enduring legacy as a composer.

Thomas Oboe Lee #6209717. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869850). Having been in Rome many times since my Rome Prize Fellowship year 1986-87, I came across my first Qui Abitava plaque on via Garibaldi across from the Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori in Trastevere. After some research I discovered that these plaques, stolpersteine, were created by a German artist, Gunter Demnig, and he personally installed all of them all over Italy and Europe. The stories behind these plaques are so heartbreaking that I wanted to write a piece of music to commemorate their history. I chose six names from the many thousands of plaques that Gunther Demnig installed in Italy and they are presented in chronological order of their births.  1. Moisé Calimani, 1870-1944    Largo 2. Augusto Sperati, 1881-1944 Agitato 3. Silvia Sermoneta, 1897-1944 Adagio, Moderato 4. Silvana Levi, 1920-1945 Adagio 5. Claudio Piperno, 1923-1944 Adagio, Andante 6. Luisa Levi, 1929-1945 Largo

Sandra Milliken #3676503. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774719). Tu scendi dalla stelle is amongst the oldest of Christmas songs in Italy. The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale. The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world.Originally containing seven verses, today’s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. Notable recordings and performances of the carol include those by Sergio Franchi, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. This arrangement features both Italian and English lyrics, with the English version being a very close adaptation of the original Italian. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #1085779. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1510579). Tu scendi dalle stelle is an essential and beloved Italian Christmas carol with several notable aspects: Origins and ComposerThe carol was written in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, a prominent Neapolitan priest, philosopher, and founder of the Redemptorist missionary order. Liguori composed the melody and original lyrics while staying at a convent in Deliceto, Italy. Popularity and TraditionIt has become one of Italy's most popular and widely sung Christmas carols. For many Italian families, singing this carol on Christmas Eve is a beloved tradition.Musical Style and PerformanceThe carol was written in the musical style of a pastorale. While it has been arranged in various ways, it is traditionally associated with the zampogna, a large Italian bagpipe instrument. Lyrical ContentThe lyrics poetically describe Jesus descending from the stars as the King of Heaven to be born in a cold, frosty cave. They reflect on the poverty and humility of Christ's birth and emphasize the sacrificial love shown through the Incarnation. Cultural ImpactTu scendi dalle stelle has had a lasting influence on Italian Christmas traditions and culture. It has been recorded by many artists and adapted into different musical arrangements over the years. The carol has also inspired variations and arrangements by classical composers like Domenico Scarlatti and Ottorino Respighi. In summary, Tu scendi dalle stelle is significant as a cherished Italian Christmas tradition, a reflection of Catholic theology and devotion, and an enduring piece of sacred music composed by an important religious figure.
