♫ This collection of songs focuses on the Claims of Jesus Christ based on the “I Am’s of the Gospel of John. 

♫ The claim “I Am the Light of the World� came from Jesus’ encounter with a man born blind. It is also found in another context – possibly at the Feast of Lights when the Temple was illuminated with a plethora of lights. With electric lights, we are used to seeing many, sometimes intense lights at night. But night light was limited in the first century to oil lamps. Light in the dark represents visibility (understanding, knowledge) safety (confidence), and the ability to navigate.

This hymn recounts many of the metaphorical invitations that Christ made to come to the Father through Him, as recorded in the gospel of John, where Jesus introduces each passage by saying “I AM…�, echoing God’s self-revealed name, YHWH, from Exodus 3:13-15 (note that YHWH is often transcribed into English using all capital letters “LORD� or alternatively in some versions as “Jehovah�). The chorus places each of Jesus’ “I AM� statements in the context of the LORD’s voice from heaven at the mount of transfiguration, as recorded in Matthew 17, which declares the Father’s love for his Son and commands us to listen to Him. Many attempt to deal with Christ as merely a great teacher, but do we listen to what this great teacher has taught? In full obedience to the command to listen to Christ, we should consider what he has said about himself, including at His betrayal in the garden where he says “I AM He... I told you... I AM He!� The composer has arranged this version of hymn for elementary piano with an alternate teacher’s duet. Full lyrics are available as a benefit to the entire family. Program note: Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble and composed by Adrienne Inglis, I am worth nothing sets a stunning Coahuilteco/English poem by Texas poet Lisa Kay Adam. From the phrase Pīntci nak�mmam ax�m (I am worth nothing), Adam creates a vivid story of two young Coahuiltecan sisters and their encounters with newly arrived Spanish settlers and mission priests in the eighteenth century. Musically, the florid phrases and haunting modalities join with the sounds of drums and melancholic bells to paint a picture of exploitation, early death, and a lost way of life in the western gulf coastal plains.

♫ This collection of songs focuses on the Claims of Jesus Christ based on the “I Am’s of the Gospel of John. 

♫ “I Am the Good Shepherd� was announced to the disciples at the same time Jesus claimed “I Am the Gate of the Sheep.� Both claims rely on the image of a shepherd and his sheep, but have a slightly different emphasis. 

♫ The main point of this claim is the self-sacrifice of the shepherd due to his love and concern for his sheep. There were many religious authorities in Judea claiming to represent God. 

♫ Jesus alone was capable of paying mankind’s sin debt and concerned enough to offer His life for the sheep.
