What a privilege to share an arrangement of this perfect song, sung by Sarah McLachlan in Toy Story 2 in 1999.  If Toy Story and Toy Story 2 hadn't already entirely induced a nostalgic empathy from its audience for the life of old toys we used to play with, Jessie's heartfelt song of her memories with 'Emily' tugs the heart strings to make grown men cry.  Randy Newman wrote a perfect little gem in this short but iconic moment in movie history.  In the most respectful way the write and the song do so little SO well.  The orchestration is sparse but completely appropriate and supportive.  This arrangement follows the original soundtrack as closely as possible and would make a wonderful addition to a kids or education concert or an evening of film, musicals or just a celebration of great song writers.  Thank you Randy Newman for your wonderful understated genius for using musical simplicity to unpack human complexity.

The vocal part is generally quite free, allowing the singer to express herself freely. The orchestration is for tymp/perc/vibra/hp/cel/harps/strings(minimum : 44222) Like a supple vine, the voice seems to unfold across the orchestra, with the warm expressive themes and shining strings, with the support of the harpsichord, the vibraphone and other percussion. Certainly, there is a coloristic note in the orchestral palette, but also a wish to combine the colors of the voice and the orchestra in different manners. Through this osmosis and through the tempo rubato suggested several times, by the absence of metronomic movements, the composer has tried to create music which breathes through freedom, suppleness and poetry, in the infinite spirals of beauty and love, outside of space and time.. The orchestral version of the work was recorded in 2014 with Isaure Equilez, mezzo-soprano and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage The orchestral parts are available from the publisher on rental.

This was first performed by professional musicians including John Thomas, trumpet soloist, at a composers' workshop at Bard College on August 1, 2003. The orchestra was tiny, with only one player per string part, one each of flute, oboe/English horn, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trombone, and two percussionists and very little rehearsing was possible. The audio clip is of that performance, 3rd movement. Please listen to the other movements at my website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. Provided here are the complete orchestra score, a piano reduction of the orchestra, and the solo trumpet parts for both B flat and E flat trumpet. Each has been preferred by some soloists. These two had been scored for military band.  It can be played by the full orchestration here, or by just the strings.  The ecossaise is an energetic country dance in duple time in which couples form lines facing each other.  Ecossaises were usually danced in 2/4 time.  Although the word ecossaise is derived from the mid-Fench term for Scotland, any connection with Scotland is unclear.  The orchestration is for Flute (with Piccolo doubling at the octave), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in A (Clarinets in B-flat are also included in the set), 2 Bassoons; 2 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in B-flat; Timpani (G2, A2, D3), Triangle, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals; Violin I, Violin I, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass.
