Tammy is a popular song with music by Jay Livingston and lyrics by Ray Evans. It was published in 1957 and made its debut in the film Tammy and the Bachelor. It was nominated for the 1957 Oscar for Best Original Song. Tammy is heard in the film in two versions. The one that became a number one hit single for Debbie Reynolds in 1957 is heard midway through the film, and was a UK No. 2 hit single in the same year. Another version was heard during the main titles at the beginning of the film and was a hit for the Ames Brothers.

This is a duet arrangement for Native American style flute in the key of B minor playing the melody, and Appalachian mountain lap dulcimer playing chord melody. Guitar backup chords are also shown. The Native American style flute arrangement is written in Nakai tablature. R. Carlos Nakai developed this system of tablature notation (commonly known as Nakai tablature) that can be used across a wide variety of flute keys and tunings. He published this in The Art of the Native American Flute (1996) with James Demars, Ken Light and David P. McAllester. This provides resources and support for musicians playing the Native American flute.

Three Impressions of Northern Arizona

for flute (or violin) and piano

 The three movements of this piece were composed in the summer of 2007 for Emily McKay, flute and Rita Borden, piano. I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

I have taken Schubert’s famous setting and arranged it in a set of musical homages to other composers. I have also included Schubert’s original theme, transposed down to F, and I would recommend playing it twice in the beginning to give your audience a good idea of it.

For most of the pieces, I tried to capture the composer’s overall style; however, there are a few particular pieces that are either quoted or used as the stylistic basis, as follows:

Mozart - I based this variation, stylistically, on Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major
(K.467), specifically movement two (Andante), as well as some of his earliest childhood
piano compositions. Symphony 40 in G minor (K.550) is quoted rhythmically.

Strauss, Jr. - For inspiration, I used Du und Du, Op. 367, a waltz that is derived from
various parts of his beloved operetta, Die Fledermaus. I quoted rhythms from this, as
well as from Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410.

Joplin - I didn’t base this on any particular piece of Joplin’s; I tried to include elements
that are common in his rags (a short introduction, arpeggiated diminished seventh
chords, chromaticism, syncopation over a boom-chuck). Perhaps the best advice comes
from Joplin himself: Don’t play this piece fast. It is never right to play ragtime fast.

Porter - I had to include an offering from the Great American Songbook! Frank Sinatra
recorded several of Porter’s well-known tunes in the 1940s, such as Easy To Love,
Night and Day, and I Love You; his renditions of these songs are heavy on the
schmaltz and sentimentality, which is exactly what I was trying to achieve in this
variation.

Bach - The minor variation! I had Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 (Little Fugue) in mind
when writing this.

der Jodelkönig - As Heidenröslein is a strophic, folk-songesque German piece, I
thought it fitting to end the variations with an imitation of traditional Alpine yodeling.  It
is named in honor of Franzl Lang, the Yodelking.

Hexantanze of Edward MacDowell is a fine example of American program music, much in the vein of The Sorcerer's Apprentice of Paul Dukas. Augmented chords, chromatic scales, and a lively double-triple meter dance section in the middle. Not all of the piece sounds minor, as there is a major section that uses a half-diminished chord to morph its way back to the minor. Key of B minor. Mostly original notes, some L/R re-assignment, and a few truncated chords and leaps. Our tempo is conservative, but this piece can really fly, no broomstick pun intended... oh, well, ya got me, I DID mean that! Marta Argerich can really launch herself into this one. MBB .

An arrangement of John Coltrane's classic Equinox for Brass Quintet with optional drum kit. Equinox is a minor blues jazz standard by American jazz saxophone player and composer John Coltrane. Originally released on Coltrane's Sound[ played in C# minor with a slow swing feel. However, it is usually played in the key of C Minor and often covered on the flute Coltrane’s wife Naima named the song Equinox. The equinox occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. John Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, the day of the official autumn equinox of that year. The release of Equinox was delayed until 1964 when Atlantic issued the album Coltrane’s Sound. Before he recorded it, Coltrane performed Equinox several times in live venues, including a session with Miles Davis’ rhythm section and at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, the other Atlantic recordings of Equinox were lost in the 1978 warehouse fire before they were released.Unlike Naima and My Favorite Things, Equinox would not become part of Coltrane's repertoire. Coltrane's attitude in writing Equinox is described by Dr Lewis Porter as Coltrane was a serious blues player and his blues pieces reflect the desire to get back to a primal mood, and away from the emotionally lighter, harmonically more complicated and complex blues of the boppers. Equinox is introduced by McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones with a Latin rhythmic passage which shifts into the slower tempo of the theme. The composition evokes a sense of mystery. Coltrane then enters on the horn (a tenor), his playing slow and pensive. The theme is repeated for two choruses and then stating the theme twice. He then proceeds with an improvisation of unusual emotional depth - reminiscent of a preacher exhorting his congregation. Elvin Jones make dramatic use of drum rolls and cymbal crashes throughout the song to maintain the sense of mystery. McCoy Tyner comps with a light feel.
