Handbell - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1284588

Composed by American Folk Song and Scottish Folk Song. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Celtic,Folk,Irish,Traditional. Score. 8 pages. Mark R Lewis #875763. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1284588).

This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.

Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.

Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.

This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.

Season: Concert
Range: 3-5 octaves.

A merry song, a chorus brave,
And yet a sigh regret
For roses sweet, in woodland lanes...
Ah, love can ne'er forget!

SKU: A0.955886

Composed by Traditional 19th century English Shanty. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. Contemporary,Folk. 18 pages. Scott S. Stewart #6673463. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.955886).

Bound for the Rio Grande was one of the favorite sea shanties among outward bound British and American ships during the 19th century. And the Rio Grande referred to in this song is that one in the southernmost part of Brazil known as Rio Grande do Sul.  A song handed down through oral (aural) means by the rough and tough salty sailors from the great days of sail produced many variations to text, temperament and purpose. Yet the common denominator in all versions is saying good-bye to loved ones left behind in order to pursue the dreams of adventure and riches. This rollicking setting is scored for 4-part SATB (optional bass solo) ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:08+-

A Drop of Nelson’s Blood” (Roll the Old Chariot Along) is one of the most gruesome sea shanties that has evolved from shanty crew to shanty crew, and from pub to pub.  Its beginnings are suspect: Is this a variation of the African-American spiritual “The Golden Chariot” or is this a parody of a Salvation Army revivalist hymn?  The dilemma: How to get a dead man’s body back home while at sea. Why preserve his corpse in a barrel of rum!  This ‘concert’ setting of the shanty is scored for 4-part men’s chorus with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:20+-.

SKU: A0.726111

Composed by American Folk Tune. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Folk. Score and parts. 8 pages. Con Spirito Music #6167501. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726111).

One of America's most recognizable and beautiful folk tunes, Shenandoah had by the mid-ninteenth century achieved wide popularity on both land and sea.

American folklorist Alan Lomax suggested that Shenandoah was a sea-shanty and that the composers likely were French-Canadian voyageurs traveling down the Missouri River — men who sought their fortunes as trappers and traders, loners who became friendly with and sometimes married Native American women. American sailors heading down the Mississippi River picked up the song and made it a capstan shanty — a work song — that they sang while hauling in the anchor.

Various versions of the song, and various lyrics to the tune, exist. Some believe that the song refers to the Shenandoah river. Others suggest that it is of Native American origin and tells the tale of Sally, the daughter of an Algonquin Indian chief, Shenandoah, who is courted for seven years by a white Missouri river trader. Other versions of the song have linked it to riverboat men, cavalry men, mountain men, and Civil War soldiers. Some use names, including Sally Brown, Polly Brown, Paddy Doyle, and Dan O'Shea, in place of Shenandoah.

This arrangement features trombone solo on verse 1, flute solo on verse 2, and trombone/flute duet on verse 3.
