The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™­-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™­ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals.Bach OverviewFirst of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. HistoryBach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer. StyleIt seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top.Revival              Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV. VoyagerNASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. Ross (1944-2019) was a Professor of Music at Arkansas State University, where he taught the double reed studio from 1968 to 2018. During his illustrious career, he became known as not only a world-class musician, but an innovator in the field of reed-making with his Ross Gouging Machine. As a performer, he served as Principal Oboist with the Arkansas Symphony and performed with the North Arkansas Symphony, Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra, Tupelo Symphony, Delta Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Nashville Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, and the St. Louis Chamber Music Society. He was a frequent soloist with the Forum Sinfonia of Krakow, Poland, touring with them in the United Stated and Europe. He held the title of Visiting Professor of Oboe at the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland and has been a soloist with the St. Petersburg and Moscow Philharmonic orchestras in Russia. As a teacher, Dr. Ross stressed the importance of expression. For him, being a musician was an extension of being human. In order to make music, one must cross the threshold from producing technically accurate sounds into a mysterious and sometimes elusive realm of heart, love, compassion, gentleness, and joy. In Dan Ross’ studio, one learned that a musician capable of evoking strong emotions must first be a person of great character. Dan Ross excelled in all things musical, but more importantly, he was an excellent man. He may well be remembered as a great musician, a great performer and teacher, or as an innovator in the art of reed making. But his true legacy lies in the hearts that he touched and the lives that he molded. I count myself fortunate to have been one of many. Sonar’s Riddle is a brief musical portrait of Dr. Dan Ross, attempting to capture the essence of his kind spirit and boundless humor.

Taking inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement in polyrhythmic 4/4 time of What a Wonderful World for solo acoustic guitar. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The tune is really happy and up-lifting. If there are any little folks (kids two to four years old) around listening, they will have a hard time sitting still. My grandson (two and a half) really got going when I played it for him. I can hardly resist the urge to dance to the tune while playing myself! The arrangement is in the spirit of the Canarios by Gaspar Sanz for classical guitar and is meant to have the nature of a dance. The repetitive alternating thumb and index and middle finger cycle going through the broken chords with the melody woven in works to give the arrangement an almost hypnotic character. The fingering for the right hand is given in first section and is basically the same throughout the piece. The fingering for the left hand can, I believe, be easily figured out from the tablature. The arrangement is within the reach of intermediate students of the acoustic guitar; anyone who has mastered the basics of fingerstyle fingerpicking guitar, and can be played on both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars. The short and long glissandos and the arpeggios of natural harmonics resembling the kalimba (thumb harp) together with the drone effects of the enharmonic tones in the chords give an added dash of African spice to the piece.
