He did not have any formal musical education, and appears to have just written music as a hobby. His father was an amateur musician, which is probably where he received his talent for music.

He was an amateur composer and according to the 1911 census, worked as a glass bottle neck maker at a mineral water works. His traditional carol “Christmas Eve� was published in the Barnsley Chronicle on 23 December 1933. In 2023 the carol was rediscovered in the Barnsley Chronicle Archives and shared with the public to coincide with the 90th anniversary of Barnsley Town Hall. Performers should feel free to omit verses and or alter the text as required. A keyboard part is provided for rehearsals.

This is a 6:00 min piece for solo violoncello and orchestra, which is a musical representation of some of Western Victoria in Australia.  The piece depicts rising up the 335 metres (1100 feet) or so from Melbourne through the Rowsley Fault to Ballarat, then continuing across the Western District Plains, culminating in a climb up Mount Sturgeon, next to Dunkeld and coming to the top, which one will notice when driving from Hamilton to Dunkeld, has quite a steep cliff face. Folk Dance works well for not only teaching/instruction but also as a short (2 minute) repertoire or encore piece. The opening section features a rhythmic quasi-Eastern European motif, and there is a contrasting middle theme in which the strings imitate rustic bagpipes. There are solos for violas and violins.
