Jmsgu3 #3468366. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549228). J. S. Bach BWV 508. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.   Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.   Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands            Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and indeed the Art of Fugue. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival                Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548649). Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring from Bach's Cantata 147, arranged for flute choir: piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, bass flute, double contrabass flute (optional) and cello (optional). Score: 19 pg. Parts: 2 pg. Duration with optional repeat: 7:36 Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring Bach composed a cantata called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Though it is the 32nd cantata, it is listed as BWV 147. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the 10th movement of the cantata. It was customary to use previous melodies as a basis for a new work - a practice called Cantus prius factus. So, the chorale melody for this piece is a historic tune called Werde munter, mein Gemüthe. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is customarily performed at weddings, and during major church seasons such as Easter and Christmas. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 75 pages. Jmsgu3 #1015958. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1435859). BACH: Partita No. 2 BWV 826 Contents: Sinfonia, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Rondeau, Capriccio. Bach's Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826, is an essential work for several reasons: Significance in Bach's Oeuvre It is part of Bach's monumental collection of six partitas (suites) for the keyboard, considered among music history's most famous and challenging suites. The partitas were published as Bach's Opus 1 in 1731, showcasing the diversity of forms and ingenious counterpoint in his keyboard writing. Partita No. 2 was one of the earliest partitas to be published individually in 1727, highlighting its significance. Musical Characteristics It opens with a grand Sinfonia movement akin to a French overture, followed by an expressive Andante aria-like movement. The fugue movement has an intense subject spanning a minor 9th interval. It includes a double (ornamented variation) of the traditional Sarabande dance movement. The final Capriccio movement is a virtuosic and contrapuntal concerto-like piece testing the performer's technical prowess. Overall, the partita exhibits a weighty, substantial, and momentous character compared to the first. Influence and Legacy It expanded keyboard suites' technical and musical boundaries and other partitas. Due to its artistic merit and challenges, it has remained a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire, studied and performed by generations of musicians. In summary, Bach's Partita No. 2 is a significant work that exemplifies the composer's mastery of counterpoint, variation forms, and virtuosic keyboard writing, solidifying the partitas' enduring importance in the canon of Western classical music.

Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3554837. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549845). Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the voice is calling us) from Cantata BWV 140. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 6 pages, solo part 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. Instrumental Duet Harp,Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971641 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary,Spiritual. Score and parts. 14 pages. Musicart Publications #4270425. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971641). Duration: 5 min. 45 sec.  Appropriate for recitals, concert performances, and worship services.  In biblical literature, Archangel Uriel is a divine messenger from God, bringing knowledge to the people while serving as a protector of truth. Uriel's providence is set in light, truth, and wisdom. Uriel is a patron of poetry, associated with repentance, and is one of the archangels who stand in the presence of God. In some traditions, Uriel stands at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, with a fiery sword, preventing Man's return to that paradise on Earth. Uriel is the angel who came to Earth and warned Noah of the Great Flood to come. Uriel also spoke to the biblical prophet Ezra on behalf of God, teaching and answering a series of questions Ezra posed to God. Uriel is associated with several literary and artistic works, notably depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting The Virgin on the Rocks. In this painting, Uriel is shown along with Mary (the mother of Jesus), with Jesus and John the Baptist presented as young toddlers. The composition Uriel makes use of two modal scales to create melodic and harmonic tension and resolution: an altered E Phrygian scale (with a lowered 6th step of the scale) and an altered C Lydian (with a lowered 6th and 7th scale step). The Phrygian scale brings a dark minor quality to the sound, in contrast to the Lydian scale's major yet veiled quality. Set in an unfolding three-part form, the music invokes a blurred and sometimes mystical atmosphere for the listener. Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music for soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer.  One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Whether making interdisciplinary works, or traditional stand-alone sonic or visual art, Hoover shapes his work through inner vision and practical experience. Jeffrey Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing. Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.

Jmsgu3 #3554477. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549837).
