Written in 2022 and revised in 2023, Stygio was the first composition I had written for an ensemble. Like the Stygiomedusa, composing this piece was a rare, mystical, exciting experience as a young artist. The tune has a funk groove with swung sixteenths, and has been considered a standard for its form and chord progressions. The piece begins with a clear melody, shifts to a chorale featuring the melody of my alma mater at Christopher Newport University, then ends in a layered lava-lamp-esque collection of colors. Stygio offers improvisatory exploration and complex chord qualities over simple rhythms and an easy, pocketed feel.
