Fairly unusually, all of the current windows were designed by a single person; by the great Russian twentieth-century artist Marc Chagall. They make for a dazzling spectacle in that small church, as they are characterised by strong, bold colours. However, they belie a heart-wrenching true story behind their commissioning as they commemorate the tragic death of a young local girl in boating accident. This piano piece aims to reflect some of the poignancy of these images. The work is characterised by a constant ostinato pedal (a repeated pattern on a single note). Around this, various triadic harmonies are juxtaposed. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and advanced players.
