Pytala Waltz is based on an old (and slightly bawdy) traditional Polish folk song, variously named Pytala Sie Pani (A Lady Is Asking) or Wszystkie Rybki (Dreamy Fish Waltz). It made its way to the United States in the 1920s and by 1940 to Bremond, Texas. In 1946 a fiddler in the Texas Playboys band recorded it as Westphalia Waltz. Since then it has been recorded by many artists, such as Hank Thompson, Johnny Gimble, Asleep at the Wheel, and Brave Combo. The present arrangement, however, is based on the original Polish folk song Pytala Sie Pani. Born and raised in Indiana, he studied music at DePauw University, Vienna Austria, Interlochen National Music Camp and Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). At these schools many of his early pieces were premiered and performed, with one work being selected for main-stage production in the season. Moving to Los Angeles and then settling in New York, he performed professionally sometimes as a singer, sometimes as a pianist, sometimes as choral conductor. He composed incidental music for the stage. In 2002 he founded a composers collective where they showcased their work. He was one of the first composers to participate in the American Music Center's initial on-line library. The New Jersey Concert Opera and the Gay Men's Chorus of New Jersey also featured his comic operas and art songs. From 2005 he moved to Costa Rica where he organized concerts with visiting guest artists to present his chamber music to the public. It was introduced on Joe Henderson's 1963 album Page One. A blend of hard bop and bossa nova, the tune was possibly influenced by Dorham's visit to the Rio de Janeiro Jazz Festival in 1961. The tune has since been recorded numerous times by different artists, making it a jazz standard.
