The song made its Broadway debut in the hit musical Oh, Kay! (1926). The musical featured Victor Moore as Jimmy and Gertrude Lawrence as Kay. Even though the show as a whole was wildly popular, Gertrude Lawrence’s rendition of “Someone to Watch Over Me� was the show’s big hit.Someone to Watch Over Me was written by George Gershwin initially as a fast and jazzy up-tempo rhythm tune – marked scherzando (playful) in the sheet music – but in the 1930s and 1940s it was recorded by singers in a slower ballad form, which became the standard. The  music craze was responsible for the the biggest sale of ukeleles in history. Sears Roebuck bought the  Harmony guitar company to make ukuleles and cashed in on the craze. It has been has been covered  dozens of times by celebrity artists world wide, and has been heard in many movies and television shows.  It has been called one of the 50 Greatest Songs of Hawaii.  The little grass shack of the title does not refer to a real location. The popularity of the song led  to the opening of a gift shop in Kona called The Little Grass Shack.
