Piano Quartet in F major in neoclassical style, loosely following the general outline of the Baroque sonata and the rhythmical patterns of the Baroque suite. A little manifesto for melody and striving for serenity, as opposed to the esthetics of avant-garde music. After the shock of the first harsh chord, the first movement (Andante molto sostenuto, un poco maestoso) wipes away all tension, in search for a renewed serenity, making use of allemande rhythmic patterns. The second movement (Allegro moderato), a scherzo-sonata form with courante rhythmic formulas and two trios, follows without a break.The third movement (Andante con moto e cantabile) is the emotional core of the composition, starting restrained and sad, with Romanian influences and a sarabande rhythm, but followed miraculously by a grand, ecstatic section.The Finale is a developed, expansive rondo (Allegro non troppo) with subtle Romanian influences, making use of bourrée and gavotte rhythms, plus minuet and gigue in the exalted coda.

Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) drew attention to himself even as a child due to his musical talent: At the age of seven he took violin lessons, only three years later he was hired as a violinist in Vienna and played little solos. His numerous compositions and particularly his 'singspiels' (song-plays) were very popular with the audience: Ditters von Dittersdorf's comedy 'Der Apotheker und der Doktor' even outdid Mozart's 'Le nozze di Figaro' in contemporary popularity in 1786. In 1766 Dittersdorf wrote the Violin Concerto in C major while being in service as leader of a music band in Großwardein, a post he had accepted in succession to Michael Haydn. The solo part was probably played by the composer himself at the first performance. The concerto is a work that is fun to play: A pleasant, particularly concertante Allegro moderato is followed by a playful cantabile Andante and a Presto as virtuoso finale.Das Violinkonzert C-Dur schrieb Dittersdorf im Jahre 1766 in seiner Zeit als Leiter der Musikkapelle in Großwardein, eine Stelle, die er in der Nachfolge von Michael Haydn angetreten hatte. Il Preludio e il Finale sono caratterizzati da piccoli elementi virtuosistici. L'andante ha un percorso molto cantabile, dove l'esecutore può mettere in risalto tutta la sua musicalità. Infine, lo Scherzo ha un carattere giocoso e scivola via senza particolari difficoltà. Nella partitura ho preferito scrivere solo le indicazioni dinamiche e lasciare libero il campo all'esecutore per la scelta dei registri e la scelta su quali manuali eseguire i brani.

Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitum�, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.

It is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara. Written in 3/4 waltz time in the key of G, Asturias can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece played andante or at a moderate speed, with a cantabile or singing style. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes for a nice interplay between the melody instruments although the second part is quite simple adding tremolo on the mandolin or long notes on the violin or flute make a nice variation. The guitar accompaniment can be played with broken chords, or gentle strumming.Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world.
