This Sonata for Viola & String Orchestra offers approachable virtuosity for the soloist, as well as appropriately scaled difficulty for the orchestra. Georg Philipp Telemann loved the viola, but sadly we have only two of his concerti for the instrument. Overall, there is very little solo material from the Baroque epoch written for viola. This Sonata was originally for viol de gamba and keyboard, TWV 41:a6. It is much transcribed for viola and keyboard, but previous to this, not for viola and string orchestra.

Suitable for Community Choirs, schools, chamber groups. Not overly challenging but interesting enough to produce great sound.
This arrangement is pretty manageable but sounds brilliant. The bridge works well. Good opportunity for solo verses if you want.
Tried, tested and very much enjoyed by all :).

On Compassion received its premiere performance on July 30, 2016, at St. Paul Seminary (St. Paul, Minnesota) by the Vox Nova Chorale, Bryan Waznik, Director, Vicki Peters, Artistic Director. The text comes from two quotes by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and the Tibetan Buddhist mantra, “Om mani padme hum,� which is repeated by the chorus throughout. The purpose of this mantra is to invoke compassion and ease suffering and pain. The piece begins as an introspective meditation before turning outward, encouraging us to seek fulfillment by exercising compassion toward those around us. -Stephanie K. Andrews
