Speaking of Queen, I had to do an adaptation of this classic (also performed by Dwight Yoakam), but it just wouldn't work with a quartet, so here it is for ..(enter fanfare!!)  a DOUBLE QUARTET!! (with an optional bass to replace the 2nd cello part.) Written in a shuffle feel, it works on swing 8th-notes, syncopation and finger snapping!  Cello 2 (pizz) goes down to the open C, Vln. 1 only up to F natural. Contains many accidentals, but very playable by the end of the 2nd year.  Great one for your end of the year performance.Key of D major/ Grade 2  Vln. 1,2,3,4  Vla. 1,2  'cello 1, 2 (opt. cb.).

This original uses a  simple melody that is passed between the violins (violin 1 plays up to high A) with counter-lines traded between all the parts. Listen as the colors change with instruments playing, being silent, doubling and independent lines. A gentle selection for that breath of fresh air during any performance.  Very playable by orchestra or quintet.         Key of D  Grade 2+

Then I thought, why not for violin and ‘cello (all in tenor clef). March-like tempo in the key of G to C (trio) and back to G (DS al fine).Great piece for solo and ensemble and very advanced.

This trip starts in the key of D to G (no L2’s or 2nd fingers) and then back to the key of D.   Vln 2/vla begin arco and have one count to change to pizzicato. ‘Cello and bass begin pizzicato and also have one count to switch to arco. All parts return to arco at the end.   Dynamics used are: f, mf, cresc., and all bowing are marked. All parts need to be familiar with the G, D and A strings (the bass never shifts). Form is AABCAASuggested grade is:  .5/1 -end of a first full year.

This adaption for 3-part string orchestra (violin 2/ viola) and optional piano is in the key of G and uses quarter, half, dotted half, 2 eighths and 4 eighths rhythms. Violin 1 does go up to C natural (L2), ‘cello and bass go up to B and down to C natural. Dynamics used are p, mf and f and there are several bow lifts. Tempo is ‘Moderato at 108’. Great piece for end of the first year or the fall concert of the second year. Suggested grade: 1/1+.
