The carol commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke, specifically the scene outside Bethlehem where shepherds encounter many angels singing and praising the newborn child. The Gloria is believed to have inspired the chorus in Angels We Have Heard on High, it is considered one of the earliest known Christmas hymns.
