When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. One of Nazareth's most elaborate pieces, the modern brigh waltz Fantástica (Phantastica, in the original spelling) is part of Nazareth's group of concert pieces. These are songs with the greatest pianistic pretensions, which, in general, were not published during his lifetime and are rarely played. It was first published in 2008 by the portal Musica Brasilis and does not have a dedication. In his autograph manuscript there is no date; it is only known that in 1922 it already existed, as his name appears in one of the listings that Nazareth made at that time. Its subtitle may have been inspired by Chopin's first four bright waltzes. This influence is also felt in the elaborate piano technique used in several passages that demand great virtuosity. This waltz could have been part of the repertoire of pianists from the great European Romantic tradition, contemporaries of Nazareth, but who never heard of his work. Until 2012, it was recorded only twice.

My Prelude on the hymn tune Bunessan (Morning Has Broken) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations.  After a brief introduction, the traditional Gaelic melody, played by the right hand, is undergirded by an original harmonic scheme outlined in wide-ranging arpeggios played by the left hand.  The next section begins with a fugato that segues into bravura passgework, culminating in a dramatic reappearance of the last two phrases of the tune, enveloped in tumultuous arpeggios.  This setting demands considerable pianistic skill.  I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process.  I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.
