Howard (A0.998851). This extended organ piece uses a remarkably small amount of material; just two chords, triads of C and F sharp, with an added augmented fourth in each. Over these chords, a melody gradually unfolds and is developed and decorated (also appearing in canon at one point in the pedals!). This musical material originates from the same composer's early original setting of the carol Away in a Manger (also available via Sheet Music Plus), which uses the aforementioned harmonies to depict the rocking motion of Christ's crib. Therefore, this organ work is a 'meditation' on this, almost in the manner of a chorale prelude. This is probably Bach's least-known of the great preludes and fugues - often ignored by organists.  It's a great piece for double brass quintet, with lots and lots of thematic trade-offs.  It's a great chance to show off the internal integrity of the group - and a lot of fun to put together.  It's transposed to F for the brass.

His compositions make use of the full range of colours which the organ is capable of producing and handle the instrument with virtuoso skill and sensitivity to tone colour. Guillou achieved international success with his piece �Alice in Organ land� (ED 8677) for organ and narrator, which he performed in many countries around the world, amusing and entertaining audiences of children and adults while increasing their familiarity with the nature of the instrument. In Seoul on a concert tour in 1993 he was given as a theme for improvisation the Korean melody SÄYA, a simple four-note melody which sings the praises of a �blue bird� with very poetic words. A rewarding piece that is not too demanding, suitable for concert performance and teaching purposes.

Since the last movement of this piece, which is perhaps the most beautiful of Hindemith's pieces, is a chorale, a version for string instrument plus organ is the obvious work to publish. Thus, 'Trauermusik' can now be performed in churches as well. Versions of 'Trauermusik' for viola or violin or violoncello with piano have been available for quite some time. Now, organists too can include this famous and moving music in their repertoire.
