The narrative spans the creation arc, from the beginning of time through the emergence of organisms and proliferation of species. The challenge we face is living together peacefully with all beings in order to leave behind a legacy of understanding and love. The piece opens with a bit of an uncomfortable pentatonic scale and haunting vocal solos, followed by G minor pentatonic with a tenacious rhythmic ostinato, closing with rich divisi harmonies and aleatoric texture.Soloists may shape the unmetered solos as they wish. Singers may spread the glissandi evenly over the duration of the note. In choral ad lib sections, you may stagger your entrances and shape the musical arc by varying note order, dynamics, duration of notes, number of singers, and frequency, not pointillistic but expressive. In piano ad lib sections, you may play the indicated notes in a pointillistic style, scrambling the order of pitches to create a celestial soundscape over the held chord. All ad lib sections may take about 10-15” but shorter or longer is fine.

Anmerkung der Komponistin      Das Vaterunser (Global Version) ist eine zeitgenössische Fassung des Vaterunsers, in der pentatonische Tonleitern und Kombinationen aus traditionellen und nicht-traditionellen Harmonien und Rhythmen verwendet werden. Das Gebet selbst ist ein Plädoyer dafür, dass Gottes Wille in jedem von uns getan wird. Infolgedessen sollte während der gesamten Arbeit eine aufrichtige und ernsthafte Stimmung im Vordergrund stehen. Die meisten Christen kennen das Gebet auswendig in ihrer eigenen Sprache und es wird heute von jeder christlichen Tradition verwendet. Ich habe die globale Version für drei verschiedene Sprachen geschrieben: Englisch, Deutsch und Koreanisch.      Diese Hymne ist im Stil des Responsorial-Gesangs gehalten: Ein Solist singt eine Linie, der der Chor oder die Klavierbegleitung folgen. Jede Passage wird auf ihre eigene Weise entwickelt, aber die übliche Technik, die in dieser Arbeit verwendet wird, ist die systematische Verwendung von Wiederholungen, die dem Vorhandenen neue Texturschichten hinzufügen (z. B. mm.11–18 und mm. 19–33). Diese Technik beginnt mit einer einfachen Figur, die einige Male mit leichten Abweichungen wiederholt wird. Das Klavier mit einer einfachen viertaktigen Passage führt in den neuen Abschnitt und die neue Zeit ein. Dann treten Chor, Solist und Klavier im leicht modifizierten Call-and-Response Stil auf. Die verwendeten Rhythmen in mm. 27–31 sind eine Variation von Gutgeori jang dan, einem der traditionellen koreanischen Rhythmen, die diese globale Version einzigartig machen.      Der letzte Abschnitt, der Gott Ehre macht, ist die Doxologie, in der vertraute Akkorde und Kadenzen plötzlich zu ungewohnter Harmonie führe, um die Ehrfurcht und das Staunen widerzuspiegeln, die zum Ende von „Amen in D-Dur führen. My goal was to retain as much of the pianistic elements and interweaving lines as possible while arranging it to give it cellistic playableness. The pleasingness of the Lied Ohne Worte is so compelling that anyone of the same mind will find a way to play my Cello 2 part. Making an arrangement for Cello Duet was not part of my plan until I happened to desire a harmony to play along with. What I noticed was something that nearly arranged itself. I set to work immediately and several revisions later, I am pleased to say there is now a version of this amazing Song Without Words for two cellos. Only one short whole-tone-sounding segment. It is surprising how many types of symmetrical, pianistic gestures can be combined using this topographical i.e. black/white keys approach, and strictly limited intervallic material. The carol uses the octatonic scale and is primarily based on just two chords; triads on C and F sharp, each with added augmented fourths. This gives the music a mysterious and mystical quality, making this a very different version to Kirkpatrick's famous setting. The rocking back and forth of the two harmonies (with a striding bass line below) mimics the movement of Christ's crib. Each verse is texturally varied to maintain development and interest throughout. The piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for just solo voice. The accompaniment is quite pianistic but can be played/adapted on the organ.

Still, Still, Still is an Austrian folk tune from Salzburg.  The words describe the peace of the infant Jesus and his mother as the baby is sung to sleep.  Included in Brenda Dillon's Memories of Christmas Collection - Book 2, this arrangement is both sophisticated and pianistic.About the arranger:  Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement.  She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday.  She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S.  In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching.  She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).
