Ascher and Paul Williams.Most people hear the intro of this piece and immediately think of Kermit the Frog, strumming his banjo and singing this beautiful little melody. It is one of the very first sheets of music that I went out and purchased at our local music store. I was so excited to learn it! Fast forward many years later (ahem!) and I am so happy to see it entertaining a whole new generation of people. On YouTube, Kermit uploaded a special performance of it in April 2020!I performed it as a duet with a student at a recital and it was a big hit (we even came up with our own choreography to go along with the piece!) This melody is one of those timeless and iconic pieces that will forever live in my heart. I was excited to see that I would be able to share an arrangement I made!My version starts out in the key of A major and offers a simple, more pianistic left hand accompaniment. Smooth, flowing arpeggios accompany most of the piece. The first verse is left to be fairly simple and lets the melody shine. The second verse has more harmony in the right hand and some fills that build on the melody. The key change has more movement and signals the last verse done in a very full, orchestra-like sound. The piano can be made to sound many ways, smooth, gleaming bright, jangling and rambunctious, even like a drum with keys. I hope to have covered most of these aspects of the pianistic touch in this set of etudes. The final item uses each interval in turn, then paired with the next-largest unit, moving through the entire group. Then, the right hand moves through all of them with a pedal point, followed by a similar exposition in the left. Arpeggios and chords ring out at the end, in a similar fashion to the summation that is the final Valse in Ravel Noble and Sentimental set. The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. My goal is to create something that sounds beautiful as a standalone piece of music and, most importantly, that it also makes pianistic sense. Each of my arrangements is made for a specific student, so the results will vary in terms of playing level. Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece. This arrangement was made for a late beginner working in Level 1-2 of the Alfred's Masterwork Classics series. This is also a great exercise for counting tied eighth notes. Root position Alberti patterns in the left hand. There are also blocked and broken fifths--one of my favorite patterns to give students because I insist on forearm rotations rather than finger-work, which usually takes a while to develop properly. Very sweet rendition that will please students and parents. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.
