This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student working in Level 2 of the Keith Snell Books. She is in the NFMC Class of Elementary III. This was strangely not very tough for her at all. The tied notes can be tricky, but they are worth the effort. Have fun with this piece, especially with dynamics and pedal. It's a great opportunity to explore different pedaling rhythms. The jumping 3rds in measures 35 and 39 may be omitted if troublesome. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

The song is an affectionate tribute to the game and to the people who collect and repair these classic machines. It's in the great tradition of the Classic American Songbook-it should remind you of a slow ballad from the 1930s and 1940s. This is a lush, pianistic arrangement with plenty of helpful fingerings, dynamics, and articulations.

There are few things more majestic than an eagle in flight against an azure sky…the broad stroke of its wings as it rises and falls on currents of air. It is with an undeniable sense of grace and elegance that it soars through the firmament. From a pianistic standpoint, the left hand provides the imagery of the winds on which the melody, representing the eagle, floats. In fact, once the piece begins it does not stop until the very end. The melody of the right hand is almost piano concerto-like in its approach. At the beginning it is very chordal, stately and grand. But as the piece progresses there are moments of flourish which capture the eagle’s delight as it swoops through the sky, ascending and descending at will…the master of all that it sees.

The opening motif is structured like a string orchestra playing with the fullness within the chords and harmonies. This orchestral-like texture is kept as a cadential point at the end of each section. In keeping things simple, the form and harmonic structures are kept traditionally.

I initially intended these pieces to be of moderate difficulty, so I could perform them, but inevitably they grew too virtuosic for my limited pianistic abilities.

The minor triads of C#, D# and G# all have white keys immediately above and below the chords. The Major triads of C and G have black keys immediately ABOVE the lowest and BELOW the highest notes. These two elements, along with the Major triads on the three sharp-key chords, have been combined into a haunting and ethereal setting, with the left-hand accompaniment stating these shapes, and the melody in the treble taking its cue from the scale implied by the chords below. Octaves, triplets, and 16ths are all part of the swirling mist of melody that surrounds the highly stable and uniform accompaniment. Each measure begins with the low octave on the root, and jumps up to state the shape being used, using dom 7ths to transition to the next sound and shape. Chopin and Liszt did not share many musical values, but they DID both utilize the shape and particular formations of various keys to suit their expressive needs. And, so we salute them both here, in this first of three pieces using this time-honored tradition of pianistic, yet evocative composition. MBB.
