I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls – a lovely arrangement of the popular aria by Michael Balfe from his operatta 'The Bohemian Girl'The Bohemian Girl is an Irish Romantic opera composed by Michael William Balfe with a libretto by Alfred Bunn. The plot is loosely based on a Miguel de Cervantes' tale, La gitanilla. The best-known aria from the piece is I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls in which the main character, Arline, describes her vague memories of her childhood of a nobler upbringing having been kidknapped by Gypsy's as a very young girl. The best-known version of the operatta is undoubtedly the 1936 full-length Laurel and Hardy film, described in the opening credits as A Comedy Version of The Bohemian Girl. It was only subsequently that he arranged them into 4 cycles of 12 preludes, drawing also from earlier compositions. Written in a traditional pianistic style, they are short sketches which are sometimes characterized by musical thoughts, sometimes by moods or by natural phenomena. The fourth volume presented here is once again divided into two cycles of 6 preludes each, with the first cycle paying tribute to the landscapes and towns of Friuli north of Venice.The 48 Preludi are either short sketches or expansive concert pieces which also allude to types of setting or themes from the piano music since Scarlatti. All of my arrangements are usually made for a specific student, so results will vary.Some fingering is included to guide you along. The song as a whole has been condensed to the main parts. As a general rule, I often shorten vocal melodies and remove excessive syllable notes (lyrics). Solo performances will sound much nicer this way. I also condense melodies for simpler timings.This arrangement was made for an early intermediate student who had just completed learning Fur Elise. I kept some of those elements in mind and risked throwing in some octaves for additional practice. I did keep all the exciting sections, otherwise it would be no fun. The song stands on its own and sounds absolutely beautiful. It has a big sound that won't take a student months to get through. Plenty of patterns they can grasp and re-use. Great for practicing arpeggios too!

In adherence to a compositional tradition which attempts to transfer a polyphonic structure to a monodic instrument and simultaneously inspired by the folkloristic music I heard on my first journeys to Cuba and Mexico, it was my intention to communicate an impression of the multifaceted complex rhythmic polyphony characterising Afro-Cuban music. The piece exploits all registers of the oboe and additionally incorporates the brief incipit of a Yoruban chant in praise of the god Changó.
