I originally wrote a Brass Band version of this work to be performed by the Freedom Brass Band of Northeast Ohio in the summer of 2011 knowing that I wanted it to be connected to a well-known patriotic text. It quickly became my most popular work and I decided to arrange it for Concert Band in 2018. Because it was adapted from a Brass Band setting, some of the instrument ranges are more advanced, but can still work for an advanced high school or college band.From a young age I found inspiration in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As a Boy Scout, I had read it at an annual service on Memorial Day. I had also studied it in school and even heard it spoken by a Lincoln impersonator. The words from this address speak to the ideals of human equality and freedom, and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect those ideals. Salut d’Amour, originally titled Liebesgruss (Love’s Greeting), was Edward Elgar’s return gift to his fiancée Caroline Ann Rodgers.  She had just written a poem The Wind at Dawn to which he promptly wrote accompanying music.  Elgar went to Schott Publishing to see if it could be published, for which Schott paid Elgar just over £1 in 1888 (worth just under 200USD in 2022).  Schott decided to change the name to Salut d’Amour as it would sound more romantic and sell more copies, which it did.Considered one of the most romantic pieces, this setting allows several instruments of the band to take part in the original solo line.  A beautiful addition to more than just your Valentine's program.Scored for the smaller British Brass Band with a minimum of 9 parts and up to the full band.  Duration ~ 2:45. 28 pages.
