During a retreat at the Blue Cliff Monastery, a very common question within the participants had been: “How can I be peaceful and compassionate in a world that seems to be full of anger and resentment?� One of the young nuns shared with us that, like Thich Nhat Hanh, she was aiming to be like a pine tree on the top of a mountain, able to always be the most beautiful tree she can ever be, despite rain, sun, snowstorms and anything else the world can throw at her. I remember her beautiful smile while she was talking to us and how she was shining in the darkness of a meditation hall. Out there, right next to you, maybe in your house, in your family, out in the society, there is violence and wars, fights and disruptions, and a lot of anger and suffering. How can you stay peaceful and be a strong and beautiful pine tree in a world which seems set up to create despair?
