Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1401781 Composed by Irénée Bergé. Arranged by Zellev. 19th Century,Classical,Easter,Holiday,Spiritual. Score. 5 pages. Zellev Music #984968. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1401781). Key Signature: D MajorTime Signature: 3/4Tempo: LentoDifficulty: Advanced IntermediateIrénée Bergé (1867-1926) was a French composer, conductor and instructor who lived in the United States. In spite of confusions between his given name and Irène, Bergé was male. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris where he studied with Jules Massenet and Théodore Dubois. Although not mentioned in his obituaries, Berge apparently also was a tenor. In an 1897 performance of Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ, a reviewer noted Irénée Bergé, a young tenor of excellent schooling, whose voice—though not too powerful—had a very agreeable timbre, and a very distinguished [performance]. He and that of the orchestra....had a grand success. Before immigrating to the United States he was an assistant conductor at Covent Garden. At the invitation of Jeannette Thurber Bergé came to New York in 1902 to teach at the National Conservatory of Music of America. Bergé is known for composing many silent film music cues. These were not written for a specific film but as generic pieces appropriate to the mood of the specific scene. He wrote 2 operas.

Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1124743 Composed by Igor Korneitchouk. 20th Century,Chamber,Contemporary. 98 pages. Studio at the Post #725501. Published by Studio at the Post (A0.1124743). Parts only (see A725494 for Score). Duration: 22 – 24 minutes, Six Parts between 12 – 16 pp. Description: Each of the SerapeÌs has a programmatic subtitle that gives the listener a hint as to how to listen. SerapeÌs Nos. 1, 4 and 7 (subtitled Three Brothers) divide up the collection symmetrically as all three share variations of the same set of motivic layers. Nonetheless, despite their common genetic heritage, the three brothers all have radically different personalities. SerapeÌ No. 2 is called Burro for its loping cowboy-swing. Its seemingly infinite upward-spiraling progression through succeeding tonal centers reminds one of the mules on the switchbacks of the Grand Canyon. SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.943947 Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Clyde Grabski. 20th Century,Christmas,Classical,Romantic Period. 49 pages. Diamond Forest Publishing #4832581. Published by Diamond Forest Publishing (A0.943947). Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer of Swedish descent. Famous for his orchestral work The Planets, he wrote Christmas Day for his students at an English school to be performed by voices and orchestra during the holiday season. Several familiar Christmas carols are arranged so that two or three may be heard at the same time. The effect of Holst’s polyphonic treatment becomes even more transparent in the instrumentation provided here. The arrangement by Clyde Grabski is for the standard woodwind quintet, but also includes substitute parts for the Oboe (Clarinet) and Bassoon (Bass Clarinet). Scores for both ensembles are included.

Small Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533673 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 134 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037307. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533673). Symphony No. 3, “Ave Maris Stella†(2005) was written for the Duquesne ContemporaryEnsemble and is dedicated to composer David Stock. Throughout his career, Stock has beena tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work isdedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significantcontributor to America’s contemporary musical life. The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When thecomposition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece. As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to changethe work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive. The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparentwith age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from theplainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento. At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways. The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, afast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series oftransformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (theunderlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement. In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a morestraightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sectionsmove between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’stransformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures fromRenaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive. There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motetsection ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and thepent-up energy dissipates to the close.FluteOboeClarinet in BbBass Clarinet in BbBassoonHorn in F/BbTrumpet in CTrombonePercussion (1 player):tubular bells, vibraphone(Percussionist needs one rosined bow for vibraphone.)PianoViolin IViolin IIViolaCelloContrabass(single strings)This is the complete set of parts.  The full score and the individual parts are avaialbe as seperate items.

Full Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.1008422 Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Arkady Leytush. 20th Century. Score and parts. 57 pages. Arkady Leytush #6535793. Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1008422). I would rather call this opus by Saint-Saens The Frenchman in Morocco. It is known that composer S-S traveled a lot during his rather long and productive life. Despite the obvious oriental flavor of the thematic material in this work, one can clearly feel the western cut, the clarity of the form and the recognizability of the techniques characteristic of classical music. In my transcription, I have not tried to imitate his transparent and always convincing orchestrations. This music itself led me on the path of creating a picture from the Arab world.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1365619 By Suze Pratten. By Suze Pratten. Arranged by Suze Pratten. A Cappella,Celtic,Folk,Irish. 4 pages. Suze Pratten #949954. Published by Suze Pratten (A0.1365619). This is an SATB setting of an excerpt from a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem called Inversnaid. I found the words fashioned in concrete on the wall of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and was very taken by them. Apparently, Hopkins went on a daytrip to the small township of Inversnaid on the eastern bank of Loch Lomond in 1881 and he wrote the poem while there. The song is written in two sections which can be layered and arranged as desired. I have suggested an arrangement on the score but feel free to change this - my only caution is to make sure you include some 'light' and 'shade' in the arrangement...it is not meant to be sung with all parts blazing for the whole length of the song!! Enjoy  - and long live the wilderness yet!

Instrumental Duet Bassoon,Flute,Instrumental Duet,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956629 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 5 pages. C Melville-Mason #6487633. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956629). This melody is described as traditional, as it is essentially an old Irish air.  The lyrics of The Minstrel Boy were set to the tune by Thomas Moore (1779 – 1852), apparently in memory of friends who lost their lives in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The tune is frequently performed in remembrance contexts, particularly those involving persons of Irish ancestry.  In the UK, it is played annually at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London.  The Minstrel Boy also featured during the procession to Westminster Abbey at the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in April 2002, reflecting her long association with the men of the Irish Regiment.  In the USA, police and fire departments historically included a high proportion of Irish-Americans, so it became traditional for The Minstrel Boy to be performed at the funerals of service members killed in the line of duty. This arrangement of The Minstrel Boy is designed for double reed duo of oboe and bassoon but the upper part could also be played by flute.

Cello and piano - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q52946 For piano and violoncello. Composed by Richard Strauss. This edition: score and part. Complete edition - piano - score - violoncello. Downloadable, Score and part. Duration 26 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q52946. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q52946). Key: F major. The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was composed over an apparently frequently interrupted period of three years, an extraordinarily long time for Strauss’s early creative phase. The compositional process spawned two independent versions of the work, the first of which is published for the first time on the basis of the text in the Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss in the current edition as a practical musical text. The genesis of the two versions and the reasons for revision can only be reconstructed in part: only one of the surviving autographs bears a date and the second version only survives in printed form. What is more, Strauss did not communicate in greater detail on this composition in correspondence with his family and friends. There are enormous differences between the two versions of the Sonata: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements Larghetto and Allegro vivace, replacing them with a newly composed Andante and Finale. In the first movement, Allegro con brio, Strauss retained the thematic-motivic material and compositionally complex passages such as the three-voice fugue in the development section (from bar 241 in the first version and bar 275 in the second version) almost intact in the new version of the sonata, but also undertook extensive alterations, particularly in the structure of the piano part, the motivic-thematic development of the movement and its harmony which became far more ambitious.12 Particular attention should be drawn to the repetitive accompaniment of the con espressione theme beginning in bar 32 and the significantly shorter development in the first version. The current printed edition of the first version of Richard Strauss’s Cello Sonata now makes it possible to follow Strauss’s compositional development during this period. The significance of the differences between the versions also mean that two sonata compositions for violoncello and piano by Richard Strauss with fundamental disparities in their underlying character are now available for performance. (from the foreword by the editors).

Amadeus Music #12639. Published by Amadeus Music (A0.531743). Charles L. Johnson (1875 - 1937) was born in Kansas City, Kansas and stayed in the Kansas City area his entire life. Dill Pickles Rag was so-named when Johnson was working at Carl Hoffman Music Company. Apparently, while composing the piece, the company's bookkeeper asked Johnson what the piece was called; the bookkeeper was carrying a carton of pickles for his dinner, which prompted to Johnson to say I'll call it Dill Pickles Rag.
