Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.782803 Composed by Nicholas Palmer. A Cappella,Easter,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 8 pages. Nicholas D Palmer #3457501. Published by Nicholas D Palmer (A0.782803). Pange lingua gloriosi proelium is perhaps a lesser known text than the Pange lingua that is sung on Holy Thursday, even though it apparently pre-dates it. This setting is somewhat minimalist, modeled on Arvo Pärt's tintinnabulum style.  The piece works as a processional for Lenten and Holy Week concerts or devotional choral services for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, feasts of the Holy Cross, and other occasions.  Piano is used in this version, but it could be sung entirely a cappella. .

String Ensemble,String Trio - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533997 Composed by Germaine Tailleferre. 20th Century,Baroque. Score and parts. 18 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3094439. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533997). In 1935, Germaine Tailleferre was asked to write the stage music for Jean Sarment's play Madame Quinze which was produced by the Comédie Française. The play was about Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV and also featured the Société de la Musique Ancienne (Henri Casadesus playing the viola d'amour, Marius Casadesus on the quinton, Régina Patorni-Casadesus playing the harpsichord, Lucette Casadesus at the viola de gamba, Maurice Devilliers at the bass viol). The production was reprised by the Comédie Française in 1950, this time at the Odéon theatre and Tailleferre revised her score at that time. These three pieces are not present in the 1935 mansucript score at the Paris Opera Libarary. They were apparently added to the score for the 1950 production and are sourced through materials at the Library of the Comédie Française

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.837498 Composed by William Shield. Arranged by Brett L. Wery. Classical. Score and parts. 272 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5776765. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837498). The score is formatted for 8.5 X 14 (legal) size paper and is 67 pages. The parts are formatted for 8.5 X 11 (letter) size paper. Duration: 16 minutes Written in 1783 by English composer William Shield to a famous libretto by Irish playwright John O’Keeffe, The Poor Soldier was a hit at its premier in November 1783 at Covent Garden in London.  Quickly reaching American theaters by the following year, it became a frequently performed American Colonial musical theater piece, remaining in the repertory for over fifty years. So popular were the tunes from The Poor Soldier that even as late as 1850, some of the opera’s songs were music hall staples.  Apparently George Washington adored this work and had excerpts performed for him at Mount Vernon. In 2008 I was hired to reconstruct the opera the The Poor Soldier from a series of piano sketches and individually sold arias dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. The 2008 production was premiered at SUNY Schenectady County Community College by Musicians of Ma’alwyck. This band suite was created in 2010 and premiered by the Capital Region Wind Ensemble.

Cello Duet Cello - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1094859 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Classical,Comedy. Score. 5 pages. RayThompsonMusic #698926. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1094859). Translated as (Duet with Two Obligato Eyeglasses) or k/a The Obligato/Eyeglass Duo. Originally written for viola and cello, I have arranged the 2nd mvt, the minuetto and trio, for a cello duet. This duet for viola and cello from 1796-1797 is believed to have been written for Beethoven's longtime frind, Baron Nikolaus Zmeskall. The Baron was an accomplished cellist, and Beethoven had played the viola back in Bonn. Both men wore spectacles at times, which is believed to be the genesis of the curious name. Apparently Beethoven wrote Zmeskall a letter containing these lines: Dearest Baron Garbage-truck driver, I am obliged to you for the weakness of your eyes. Perhaps Zmeskall lent Beethven his eyeglasses. Who knows? One thing is certain: the piece exudes a sense of sheer playfulness, similar in spirit (if not style) to Mozart's Duo for Violin and Viola in B-Flat.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church.  Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody.  Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom.  She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart.  Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.”  Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular.  When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind.       J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded.  In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original.  You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences.     This composition is 201 measures in length.  It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141).  Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C.  There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing.     The introduction is 21 measures in length.  It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto.  In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression.       At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles.       The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme.     Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds.  Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument.     The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.733166 Composed by Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935). Arranged by Benjamin Ayotte. 20th Century. Score. 10 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #3424921. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733166). Schenker is known to have sent Julius Röntgen a copy of his Zweistimmige Inventionen. He seems to have been particularly fond on no. 2 of the set of four. He wrote to Röntgen on 13 April 1901, I hope that Invention No. 2, of which I am very proud, interests you. It is indeed rather quick-I mean passionate, deliberate, very expressive! It is here, primarily, where I’ve breached modernism. It would make me very happy if this invention pleased you. Patrick Miller offers this assessment of these works vis-à-vis Scheker’s other published output:The four pieces in this set seemingly mark a departure from the dense harmonic and rhythmic textures of Schenker’s previously published piano compositions. The intricate melodic lines of these pieces, however, imply a texture rich with harmonic and rhythmic details. … The first invention is a delicate chromatic study, while the second invention is an intense chromatic piece based on the B–A–C–H motive, Bb–A–C–B. With regard to thematic material and texture, the third invention is the most transparent of the set and is an exacting study in finger articulation. The fourth invention is a canon and, according to a printed footnote, is ‘a study after JS Bach’s Invention no. 2 (C minor) .

Arranged by Raymond Fenech. 20th Century,Christmas,Holiday,Instructional,Multicultural,World. 31 pages. Raymond Fenech #3572205. Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.760327). Christmas Day is a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910.  It was originally composed for SATB with parts for a sizeable orchestra. It lasts for about seven minutes. The work was dedicated ‘To the music students of Morley College’. Apparently it was extremely well-received and had a further presentation on 18 February at a music students’ ‘Tea and Social’ event. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, the composer makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’ The Duration is approx. 6.16 minutes and the level is Advanced Intermediate.

Piano trio - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q2798 Ballet blanc in five scenes for violin, cello and piano. Composed by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. This edition: performance score. Downloadable, Performance score. Duration 30 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q2798. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q2798). In addition to his extensive musical expertise, Bernd Alois Zimmermann was also extremely knowledgeable in other fields, above all in philosophy and literature. The composer had devoted himself intensely to the concept of time within the area of philosophy: he became famous for his concept of the “sphericality of timeâ€. In his work Présence, apparently disparate elements are pulled together in an all-embracing simultaneity. The three instrumentalists are assigned literary figures who can all be considered as constants in Zimmermann’s Å“uvre: Ubu Roi (piano), a voracious grotesquely caricatured tyrant from Alfred Jarry’s absurd play, Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quijote (violin) and Molly Bloom (cello) from James Joyce’s ground-breaking novel Ulysses. The instrumentalists are accompanied by a silent (!) “speaker†who hisses so-called “word emblems†from Paul Poertner’s volume of poems Wurzelwerk between the movements. The word emblem for Scene 3 incorporating musical quotations from Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata Op. 83 and Stockhausen’s Zeitmaße is: “Alle Wahrvögel nisten in einem einzigen Baum†[All true birds nest in a single tree].

Healy WILLAN Chaconne 1957 (from Rondino,Elegy & Chaconne, for Organ)Composer of over 800 works and teacher of over 50 years, Mr.Willan used to be known as the Dean of Canadian Composers and was a fixture of the Toronto music scene for a very long while. Apparently he wrote Operas and Symphonies as well, but these have not been easily available to experience. Perhaps this is just Canadian natural reticence or 'reserve'. However, it's a characteristic that is not conducive to cultivating popularity (needless to say). Nevertheless, Willan's music is simply lovely, and it's nice to know that, if you 'cotton on' to it, you will probably never exhaust the supply.Rondino & Elegy arrangements to follow soon.

The Fairest of the Fair March for Brass Quintet and Optional DrumsBy John Philip Sousa Arranged by Jari VillanuevaScore 2 Trumpets in BbHorn in FTromboneTubaOptional DrumsSubstitute parts for Eb Horn and Baritone T.C .providedThe Fairest of the Fair (1908) by John Philip Sousa was composed for the annual Boston Food Fair of 1908 and is claimed that the memory of a pretty girl he had seen at an earlier fair inspired the composition. Sousa composed The Fairest of the Fair intending his Band to perform it at the annual Boston Food Fair in the fall of 1908. It is the only work of any kind that he composed that year and one of only a handful of compositions that he wrote between 1906 and 1910. He apparently completed it in New York during the summer, as the final page of the original score was signed John Philip Sousa, Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.The march almost missed its premier at the Boston Food Fair. Because of an oversight the music, which Sousa had written and scored out, did not have individual parts written out for the performers. This was discovered the day before the performance. The new composition had received much advanced publicity and it would have been an embarrassment to Sousa not to have it performed. The band’s copyist, Louis Morris, rose to the occasion and on the train to Boston stayed up and copied out the parts so the band could premier the work as advertised on September 28, 1908. In the morning when Sousa found out Morris was working all night he instructed him to finish the work and get some rest. Morris missed the concert and the premier but found an extra $50 in his next paycheck.Published by JV MUSIC Baltimore MD www.jvmusic.net https://youtu.be/KeE5dMnrevU
