German.The motet 'Da ward geborn ein Kind' by the composer and choir director Peter Paul Förster from Wuppertal is based on words from Ezzolied. This multi-verse poem on the miracles of Christ, written by the canon Ezzo from Bamberg in 1083, marked the beginning of early Middle High German literature. From this poem, Förster took verses on the birth of Christ and the praise to Mary and turned them into a singable choral work for mixed choir (SATB) and organ the tonal language of which can be 'placed between archaic church mode and modern music'. Förster's fondness of Gregorian quotes becomes apparent in the repeated use of the Gregorian chorale 'Puer natus est nobis'. A musical Christmas gem for (church) choirs at an advanced level.

This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) Lili of St. Luke'sbyFran OlsenIn 1990, a small black and white spotted dog, who had been found wandering, abused and sick in Surry County, Virginia, was scheduled to be put down by the Surry SPCA as unadoptable.  Three placements had failed because the young female was too afraid of the people.  Her last chance was Richard Lee Austin, curator of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia.  Austin had reluctantly agreed to look at the small spoodle.  He had just lost a beloved Pekingese of 18 years and did not want to go through the pain of another loss.  Lili, however, immediately seemed to know that this was her person, came directly to him and won his heart.  It was a mutual love affair.Lili went eagerly to work with Dick at the Gift Shop of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia, for the next 11 years.  She was gracious and never intrusive with the visitors.  Small children were able to approach Lili without fear.  She seemed to understand that she needed to be quite still with them.In 2000, Lili became the star of her own book, Lili of St. Luke's:  The Blessing of the Animals.  Written by Fran Olsen, a volunteer at the church, and illustrated by Buttons Boggs, the charming book tells the story of Lili's desire to go to church.  The animals in the church yard scoff at her.  She finally succeeds in going to church for the annual Blessing of the Animals service which commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi.  Since the book was published many children have come to the church to have their picture taken with Lili.Mrs. Olsen, who is also the publisher, has donated a dollar from the sale of each book to be shared with Historic St. Luke's Church and three area humane societies with which Lili has been associated.  Contributions in the first six months of publication were $1200.Lili died on June 7, 2001, from cancer.  A week before she died, she made a personal appearance at a local elementary school.  As always, she was gracious and gentle, even though later it was apparent that she was deathly ill.  A bronze statute is planned to honor the gentle spoodle and will be placed at the church so children can continue to have their picture taken with her.  This elegy was commissioned for performance at the annual Blessing service.

Both the painting and the poem create the feeling of a magical place where beauty, joy and pleasure abound. It is a mysterious place, perhaps as occurring in a dream, yet a place where one does not wish to leave. In The Land of Wonder-Wander begins quietly with vague tonality and sparse instrumentation as it transports the listener into this mystical land. As the tempo becomes stricter and the instrumentation fuller, the beauty of this place is apparent. A change to a triple meter and a faster tempo creates a joyous and wondrous section as there are many sweet treats growing to satisfy the soul. Children scampering and playing are represented by an allegro section with playful melodies and slight dissonance. The Dinkey Bird becomes the focus of the next section, which uses a staccato motif surrounded by rapid scales and arpeggios. These ideas build in intensity, expressing the wonder and beauty of this far away land, until they begin to fade away as the land recedes into the sea. A last flourish occurs as if one is trying to hold on to the experience before one wakes up from this marvelous dream.

The second theme consists of quotes from an acclaimed 1854 speech made by Chief Seattle to Governor Isaac Ingalls Stevens that I set to music, a compelling plea to respect the rights of indigenous peoples and a well-formulated reminder that human beings are a part of nature, they are not its masters.
