Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen (Hell's vengeance boils in my heart), commonly abbreviated Der Hölle Rache, is an aria sung by the Queen of the Night, a coloratura soprano part, in the second act of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). It depicts a fit of vengeful rage in which the Queen of the Night places a knife into the hand of her daughter Pamina and exhorts her to assassinate Sarastro, the Queen's rival, else she will disown and curse Pamina.

Memorable, fast-paced, and menacingly grandiose, Der Hölle Rache is one of the most famous of all opera arias. This rage aria is often referred to as the Queen of the Night Aria, although the Queen sings another distinguished aria earlier in the opera, O zittre nicht, mein lieber Sohn.

The opera is set in ancient Egypt. Mozart's sister-in-law - Josepha Hofer - sang it in 1791 at the premiere of this opera.

This arrangement of Variation II from Frédéric Chopin's popular Variations on a Theme by Rossini, sounds more like the mature Chopin. Chopin wrote the Variations at age 14, probably for his father (an amateur flutist) or one of his father's friends. In this version, John Sawoski creates a virtuosic and advanced accompaniment in an idion that resembles Chopin's later compositional style, and includes a more fluid and advanced flute part as performed by Peter Sheridan.

In the fall of 2013 my friend and colleague, Paulius Grigonis who is the organist at St Joseph church here in Vilnius was preparing to play a recital at Vilnius Cathedral around Christmas time. He approached me asking for advice about the pieces he could be playing.

I offered him to compose a set of 6 variations on the famous Christmas tune Adeste fideles and he agreed too much hesitation (too bad).

I started working on the composition but got stuck at the end of the 5th variation. I used major and minor chords only. My goal was to create something colorful and modern and yet understandable to the listener.

Because of these simple chords the harmonies are very clear and transparent. What makes it sound modern though is that I avoid traditional chordal progressions of the perfect fourth and perfect fifth. This would imply tonic-dominant, dominant-tonic, tonic-subdominant, subdominant-tonic relationship.

But I didn't want this. I wanted to surprise my audience and my friend Paulius. So I chose all kinds of progressions - minor and major seconds, minor and major thirds, even a tritone to keep it fresh.

However, the result was too difficult to play for Paulius on a short notice and I got side-tracked with other projects. Although the idea of completing the variations never left me.

So last weekend I sat down and added the last variation with a CODA.

I hope you'll enjoy this piece which is dedicated to Paulius.

Four harmonically luscious piano variations composed in 2018 on the hymn Now the Day is Over by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924).

Motifs from this simple, eight-bar hymn are manipulated and integrated throughout the variations. Each variation is essentially tonal, with some chromaticism and modality, and preserves the original harmonic structure of the theme. The final variation ventures further. 

The piece is not outwardly challenging or virtuosic, but does contain some complex voicing issues and innovative piano writing, both of which will require a thoughtful, sensitive pianistic touch.
